Guest guest
) Welcome to the Cold ) Have Extra Buckets!!! Take in the frozen ones in the morning and bring out the fresh ones... Repeat the process again in the evening ) Otherwise you need a heated Barn ) Love Ya Helen Hey all ) i've got a question for all of your that live up north or where it's really cold! It didn't get above freezing here today and I spent my whole day breaking the ice on all the water buckets...there has *got* to be an easier way?! The ice was so thick on our 'pond' (lol low part of the yard that floods) that I was able to walk on it today, usually the ice breaks. I don't mind the cold weather ) and love the snow but it sure makes taking care of all the monsters a pain! Any suggestions on how to keep their water from freezing? One of the farmers said to put a ping pong ball in the buckets since they are so light the wind blows them around and the water doesn't freeze as much or as bad...but my goats take them out and try to eat them! {0} {0} {0} {0} {0} {0} {0} {0} {0} ^\|/ ^ \|/ ^ \|/ ^ \|/ ^ \|/ ^ \|/ ^ \|/ ^ \|/ ^ \|/^ **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** ~~~THINK SPRING ~~~ angelbear1129@... )
Guest guest
Hello Jessie Well, you could dramatically lower the freeze point by dissolving salt into the water. Problem is, dissolve too much and it becomes useless as drinking water. Perhaps you can play with dissolving other things like vitamins into the water, just don't dissolve any antifreeze into it. Maybe stick one of those lawn whirlygigs in so that the wind paddles the water around. That is if the goats don't eat the wings off the whirlygigs. If you have an electrical outlet nearby, you can plug in one of those fishtank aerators. If you're handy, make a little windmill out of balsa wood to stir the water around. If there's a junkyard nearby, prop up an old bicycle so that the pedals hit the water , secure the frame with hose clamps and tape " vanes " into the spokes of the rear wheel so that the wind moves the pedals around. Use a larger bucket of water, it'll take longer to cool a larger bucket. When I lived up in Canada, we kept our animals indoors. Thankfully that's only been a number of cats, a couple of gerbils, a parakeet, some guppies and on one brief occasion, a chicken. Hows that for a few ideas? Guest guest
It's hard to put *anything* out because the goats will eat them lol I was going to get the little heaters for the water buckets, but the goats would eat the cord and everything i've thought about building the goats would destroy or try to eat. most of the water buckets have Gatorade and a bit of salt and also Ammonium Chloride in them and others are just 'fresh' water plus the ducks have a kids pool filled with water and they all freeze over and some freeze solid. it makes it hard because everything I could use I'm unable to because some of the animals have special needs. what i've been doing is boiling water and breaking a whole in the ice and pouring the hot water on the ice on all the water buckets by the time I get all the animals out of their shelters and get meds given the water is nice and warm and ready to drink in the morning. that works the best out of everything else. Thanks for the tips ) How are you doing ?! Hope you are staying warm ) take care! Guest guest
Thanks Helen!**Otherwise you need a heated Barn )**LOL At this point I'd settle for a barn!!!! We don't have one! We have two shelters that I built one is small and the other is big and divided into two shelters. They are really wonderful, I made them really small so that their body heat would keep it warm! They are only about 4x4 and almost 5 feet tall in the highest spot (inside). the big one is 8x4 and is divided into 4x4 shelters. The goats really like them a lot they were hard to build but well worth it!!!! Here is a pic of the small shelter. During the summer I keep the door open and they sleep where they want but when it is cold I put straw in there and they sleep with the door closed. There are also holes drilled in the floor of the shelter for drainage. Guest guest
Hello Jessie You could put the cord inside a pipe. The electricians have something called BX conduit which is a flexible metal pipe. You could probably get an electrician to put one over your cord. I would suggest those block heaters that they use in cars. They use only 50 watts so that the water is just kept warm enough to not freeze rather than boil the water like those portable water heaters. You can buy them from an automotive parts store and you just drill out a hole in the side of the bucket and tap it in as a plug to the hole, screw in an electrians junction box over it and route the cable out through BX conduit and your goat won't be able to chew it, that is unless they can chew through steel.
