Hi Laury,

Welcome to the list. When my 8 yo daughter was in the severe throes of OCD, she

nearly stopped eating

and lost quite a bit of weight. In her case, it was " just so " issues. There was

always some problem

with the way something looked. She'd think she could it eat it, but then no,

something was wrong. For

awhile, she had only one thing she could eat.

In any case, your son's choking obsession sounds like OCD to me. I'd recommend

you find a CBT

therapist who can help you use the E & RP method I described in my earlier post.

In your son's case,

you would try to identify a food that he believes is rather unlikely to make him

choke and practice

taking bites to show him that he won't choke. As he gains confidence, you could

move up the hierarchy

towards the foods he fears more.

Unfortunately, this isn't the kind of thing you should just do " in the meantime "

before you see the

psychologist. You need to create a framework first to be successful. The food

issue is so tricky

because they have to eat, and yet your forcing him will not be helpful. Perhaps

you could just focus

on getting calories in him for now (ice cream, whatever it takes!)

Good luck,

in San Diego
