Guest guest
You really need an emulsifier, like Polysorbate if you want them to blend. If you don't mind shaking it before every use, you can try mixing the eos with a little glycerin, then add the alcohol and finally the water. Guest guest
Polysorbate is a chemical that you can buy. It works to mix the water and the oils together into a stable mix. The It used to be made from Ash Laurel, but it is synthetic these days. You can get either Polysorbate 20, 60 or 80. The higher numbers are for more water in your solution. For instance the 20 would be good for a lotion. Everclear is a liquid so think of it as water in this case. With your solution being mostly water, you would want the 80. You mix equal amounts of your oils and the Polysorbate, then add the water (or alcohol and then water). It may be a little cloudy at first, but it will go back to being clear after a while. Guest guest
I thought the alcohol was supposed to be an emulsifier. Why use it when it doesn't emulsify? smiles, Lonie Re: Linen spray won't emulsify You really need an emulsifier, like Polysorbate if you want them to blend. Guest guest
Alcohol mixes with water, but not with oil, so how could it act as an emulsifier? The alcohol is to help the spray evaporate in the air. You don't really need it in a linen spray. But if you want your spray to stay blended together you have to add something to mix them together in the first place. If you are using a light oil like Lavender, you can probably get away with just using vegetable glycerin. But it's not the greatest emulsifier and it doesn't do anything for the heavier oils Heidi ----- Original Message ----- From: " Lonie Mc " <lonie@...> > I thought the alcohol was supposed to be an emulsifier. Guest guest
I just ordered some from Somerset, I will see if I can rustle up the URL. In the meantime if you do a search for Polysorbate 80, lots of places come up. I chose one close to home. Guest guest
Hi Lonie: Sorry I didn't get to this earlier...don't throw away your old blends! You can salvage them by adding a small amount (about an ounce or so per 8 oz. product) of 190-proof grain or ethyl alcohol and shake until it clarifies. If it doesn't clear on the first try, add a bit more and shake again. You have to remember that 70 per-cent alcohol is still 30 per-cent water. Adding more water to this is risking clouding and separation. I recommend using 190 proof (which is 95%) grain or 39C denatured alcohol, dissolving the oils in this and slowly adding distilled water to that. (up to an equal amount...stop if it starts to cloud). From what I understand (I have never used it myself), using polysorbate 20 will result in an emulsified, but cloudy mixture. You can package the spray in opaque containers otherwise.
