Guest guest
If he is covered under an IEP, the requirements for testing and advancement may be waived or modified if it's appropriate to do so because of disability. If he's failing math, it would be prudent to have him evaluated for learning disabilities; there may be a reason he won't do his homework. Even without learning disabilities, he would qualify under Other Health Impaired (OHI) and doesn't need an SED label. Please do not delay in contacting the Sped Dept. to make him a focus of concern; the testing procedures and paperwork may take several weeks. The IEP doesn't need to be perfect as it can always be amended later, but it would be to his benefit to get the process started as quickly as possible. What experiences have you had that lead you to believe the school district isn't up to the challenge? Deborah <<<<<From: ruth porter <ruth2b4@...> Our son is 15y/o and was dx at 12. I think he has had OCD for many years because of his controlling behavior of needing things to be his way. Our H.S. just changed the requirements for advancement. Starting next year if a freshman fails 1 course they do not advance. This is of concern to me. Right now my son if failing math. It is due to him not doing homework. He starts H.S. next fall. I am working on an I.E.P. for him. Have not yet contacted the special ed. dept. because I am researching our St. rules and regs. first. I feel that our school district is not really up to this challenge so that is why I have put off meeting with them. In middle school the counselor said we could have him get special ed. under the severly emotionally impaired catagory. To me this was unacceptable. My son is very bright......but does have problems. DO YOU THINK MY NOT WANTING THAT LABEL FOR OUR SON IS UN-INFORMED ON MY PART?????? I am feeing that I am letting my own insecurity and baggage get in the way. I realize he need help to get through H.S. On a good note he was able to still place well on the 8th grade ITBS. He is now average or above average but has dropped in math and problem solving. Hope everyone is having a good long weekend.
