Guest guest
Hello...my name is and I'm the mom of two children with Tourette Syndrome as well as anxiety and ocd. My daughter, a, is 11 and she also has ADD; my son Ben, 8, has ADHD. I too live with TS/ADHD and severe (but finally manageable OCD). I joined this list to meet other parents who live with the same challenges my family faces every day. I'd love to learn new strategies to help my children better manage their disorders. I look forward to meeting all of you! Take good care

Guest guest
Hi : Thank you for the welcome...I look forward to getting to know you as well. You say your husband has OCD too...does he get help for it as well? I find when my OCD or anxiety is high, it definitely affects my kids...and they end up with skyhigh anxiety as well, which of course feeds their own o/c's... Guest guest
Hi Beth--Thanks for the welcome!!!! I too find that when the anxiety rises in my children tht so do their o/c's...it is a challenge tryng to keep them on an " even keel " isn't it? Interestingly enough, my son, 8, has major sensory problems with clothing as well (daughter has other sensory problems but not as severe as my son!) I had always attributed it to their TS, but maybe it comes with the OCD package as well. Poor kiddos eh? How do you handle it? Basically, I let them wear what makes them feel most comfy...I just don't get into clothing hassles with them. (Of course, in the winter...like now LOL ... I do insist they wear coats, cos my son would just as soon go out with a T-shirt..He just doesn't " feel " the cold the way I do, for instance...He waits til he's a popsickle and then comes back frozen!!!) Guest guest
Hi , My husband just started taking Luvox 2 days ago. This is a BIG step for him. He has always been very good at hiding his ocd somewhat and quite embarrassed about it too. Unfortunately that has not been the case the last 6 months or so. He did take meds for 2 months and quit. He felt he could handle it on his own........not so! So with much gentle persuasion, he is trying a different med! And I am holding my breath!!! How do you handle all that oc.............??? Take care, in Pa DHu1017467@... wrote: ---------------------------------

Guest guest
Hi : Ugh, it's been such a nightmare to be honest!!! And had it not been for the health crisis with my son back in May, 1998, when " out of the blue " he exploded literally with extremely significant tics (TS), I don't know that I would ever have recognized that I had OCD and how significantly I had it. It's been a long road. Getting Ben better managed--which in itself required a lot of effort--forced me to face things about myself and thus began the long, long journey of getting help. Turned out getting help for my son was much easier than getting it for myself because like your husband, I didn't really recongize in how much trouble I was in! I knew I was depressed...have suffered off and on with MDD since childhood but never received treatment. By Christmas, 1998, I knew I needed help...but you know you're busy (working 60 hr weeks) etc and I just pushed it off,,,struggling along best as I could. With Ben's dx of TS/OCD and ADHD, my depression went from bad to worse...and so did the anxiety. It was Ben's psychiatrist actually who first tipped me off as to what bad shape I was in. My own gp wrote me off as " clinically depressed " put me on Paxil and that was that. But I wasn't getting any better...she just kept upping the Paxil and sent me to counselling with a social worker, once a month. (To say that helped at all would be a profound overstatement!) Thankfully, armed with some info from Ben's doc, I agressively began to seek treatment for myself! (I owe so much to that doc! He intervened on my behalf when he really shouldn't have for protocol reasons). I finally ended up -- at my insistence -- at the Toronto Tourette Syndrome Clinic -- under the care of one of Cda's leading TS researchers and psychiatrists, Dr. Sandor. He dxed me immediately with the same triad, but OCD is by far my greatest demon, followed closely by depression; immediately put me on the proper meds; followed me closely in terms of those meds; suggested CBT, which I took him up on. I did the CBT but was still depressed and am now in cognitive therapy (indvidual) for depression with a psychologist in private practice. This took more than 18 mos. to get all sorted! Long road, but soooooooooooo well worth it looking back! A year ago, I was such a mess!!!!! I was having 5-10 panic attacks a day, while off work! Ugh! So scary...such a difficult time in my life. But I'm much better thanks to all these interventions. With OCD/depression, I truly believe a multi-pronged approach is best...it's a horrid disorder and no one should have to live this way. My best to your family...and I sure hope the new meds will put your husband on the right track!
