Take one look inside Whitwell Middle School and you see water damage along the ceiling. If you look closer, you see mold. Parents say enough is enough. " The health and safety of our children is at risk. This has been going on for 12 years and we need a new school. It has to happen. " School Board Chairman Jim Posten shows us another problem - a piece of plywood covering a hole in the wall from water leaks. Posten says the county would have the money to build a new school, if county residents agree on March 10 to a resolution to increase the sales tax by a- half cent. " It's Christmas. Santa Claus comes on March the 10th. Let's be there to get the presents. The presents are going to be passage of a resolution. " Parent Shirley Kilgore says, " No one that I know lives in the conditions that they're taught in and there's no reason for this. " Last week school leaders say they were forced to cancel a basketball game because the gymnasium was leaking rain. Classroom windows let cold air in, to air out musty smells. Parents we heard from fear unless the resolution passes, it'll be their students left out in the cold. " All we want is for them to say yes. Let us fix these problems and let these kids be in a safe and healthy environment. " Posten says the half cent sales tax increase will generate roughly one-point-three million dollars a year. He says the money will be for building purposes only, including a new gymnasium for South Pittsburg, upgrades at Jasper Middle School and a cafeteria expansion at Monteagle. Depend on us to let you know if the resolution passes.
