Guest guest
Hi list, Here is the update from our share. A few weeks back, I mentioned about setting up meetings with the teachers and the school on the 504 Plan. Fortunately, we don't need all of that anymore. At least not with the current stubborn and narrow minded school psychologist. For the new members, would be a senior in his high school and had a horrible junior year because the school refused to implement some of our requested accomodations. His high SAT score was used to go against him for not providing the accomodations. Because of the school's altitude, would not have a happy year, if he returned to his school. He said that he would not succeed for the coming year, if he returned. Therefore, I inquired about a few med-sized colleges to see if they are willing to take a senior student. Fortunately, there are such colleges! But, all of them require to have GED test taken ( a test to qualify you as a high school graduate, when the high school diploma is missing). The next GED will be in September and we would not have time to take it before the school starts. I talked with Stocken College in July. They were very interested in because of his SAT score. But, lost his motives to a lot of things after the past year sufferings and was not able to write the essay they needed. By the end of August, I was preparing to go back to his high school. The Admission counselor called about his essay and application on Aug30. Apparently, that gave the motivation and he did the essay within two hours and went down to the college for application (2 hours driving). The Dean was pleased with all his honor course track, the SAT scroe and his computer tech support experiences. Since is only missing the 12th grade English for his high school requirements, they were willing to make exception for him to let him make up the GED later. Two days later, we went down to register him into the college. That day, the Admission Counselor was with us from 9:00am to 4:30pm to make sure everything is ok. We were treated as VIP! got his long overdue respect back. At his high school, he was treated as a bad student and a trouble maker. The most appealing part is that the school appeared to be very coooperative in dealing with his problem. Now, is taking the courses he likes and seems to be enjoying. Of course, dealing with college is a totally different ball game and we'll learn gradually. But, we are so happy that is now a freshman and is able to put his high school behind. Thank you all for the support and advices you've been given to us. Take care. TC

Guest guest
TC, I'm so glad that everything is working out for Chris! Just for the record.... in case someone else is faced with the same type of situation.... You could have gotten an attorney or at least consulted with an advocate and threatened legal action. I get soooo mad when schools play dumb about 504's and IDEA! Take care and God Bless! Wish the best in college for me! I bet this has already done a lot for his self esteem. mary from La. tchao@... wrote: > From: tchao@... > > Hi list, > > Here is the update from our share. Guest guest
HI TC: What wonderful news about Chris. He is finding the best place for him. Today we had a very nice young man, only 14, in our office as he is here to take 3rd year college classes. He is homeschooled and really enjoys taking college classes. He is still young chronologically but getting the mental stimulation he needs. Luckily he also has the personal maturity to make it happen. Please keep us posted about maybe he can find other accelerated kids like himself to socialize with at his new college. Please tell him congratulations and I am very proud of his achievements. Take care, aloha, Kathy (Ha) kathyh@... At 03:11 PM 09/17/1999 -0400, you wrote: >From: tchao@... > > > > >Hi list, > >Here is the update from our share. Guest guest
Hi list, Thank you so much for the kind words and the generous blessings you gave us. I'll keep you informed of Chris's progress. , thanks for the advices. I realized our rights much too late. But, I called our state (New Jersey) advocacy agency for our rights in the summer. They instructed me what to do for this comming year. Fortunately, we don't need this anymore. Although this list should not be religious, but, I still like to share with you. I prayed a lot on how we should move forward and where we should go. I had thought that going back to high school was the answer for Chris. Therefore, that magic phone call made from Stockton college's counselor a few days before the school started really shocked me and it turned the whole thing around. It was God's answer to my pray. Praise the Lord! List, please DO NOT give up. Road seems to be frustrating and long for now. But, hope always arrives to your surprise. Just look at so many good news, small or big, happened to our list members lately. Take care. TC
