Guest guest
WOW Jane - it was so nice to get up and read this! I was feeling guilty that I didn't participate more in the 30-day challenge (life has been BUSY here at home and I had two back to back shows, one of which was in Nashville and I drove to that one - LONG drive :-)But I read everyone's posts, and was really happy to see that people were sharing recipes and encouraging each other.SO HAPPY to hear that you are "hooked"! Once your body starts getting greens on a daily basis, it KNOWS how good they are and: 1) your tastes do change and you begin to be able to appreciate (and believe it or not, even like) the more bitter greens (or to be able to increase the volume of the greens in your smoothies), and 2) you begin to CRAVE the greens - your body REALLY knows when something good is missing!THANKS again Jane for sharing! Guest guest
I agree with you. This 30 day smoothie challenge was great to make a definite commitment. My husband and I have had a green smoothie every single day in February and will continue to in the future. I added more greens each week. I made myself eat 2 raw meals every day and 3 many days. I tried the raw soups and saloups in Rene Oswald's book and have enjoyed them a lot. We feel better, have more energy until bedtime, sleep less, have better digestion. I noticed that my fingernails are stronger and smoother. No more lagging in the late afternoon or in the evening, I can iron at 9:00 pm and feel lots of energy. That was unusual for me. I will continue to eat more greens and raw foods daily. Also I think more clearly and have no more times where I spend an hour looking for my keys. I will say I have been eating a green smoothie most mornings for several years, but I added greens 3 times a day this month and I really can tell a difference with this addition. Thanks for the push to get me going in an even more healthy direction. Janet
Guest guest
That is wonderful Janet. Can you estimate how many pounds or bunches of greens you use per person per day? I would really like to get in a better habit of making a green smoothie daily. I was doing it for a long time, then just sort of lost the habit. I have Rene's book and need to try the saloop. I have done hot soups in the Vm, but not any savory (not sweet) drinks, unless they were heated to become soup. Velda On 3/3/2012 1:29 PM, Janet Fowler wrote: > I agree with you. Guest guest
I'm not Janet, but I can tell you that when I first start with Green Smoothies, a pound of greens would last at least 4 days (for me - one person) I would put about 1/4 pound in one smoothie per day - perhaps a bit less.... Guest guest
Lea Ann exactly how big is your smoothies? A serving of spinach for example is 1 cup or 30 grams. 30 grams weigh approximately 4oz so you are adding almost 4 cups to each smoothie if you are drinking 2 a day. That seems like a lot to me especially if you are adding other fruits and vegetables. Guest guest
Hi Tom,I'm sorry that I don't measure what I put in. I use 2-3 big hands full of greens per smoothie, and I can often fill a 3-cup mason jar with some smoothie left over.My smoothies are usually non-fruit - blended salads like some of these: /links/Recipe_Links_001298558025/Blended_Salads___Cold_Green_Soups____Sal_001327151383/OR, when I use fruit, it is either green apple (1/2 of one) + ginger OR about a cup of berries - either blue, black, or rasp :-)I'm sure that I could be wrong also about my estimate of how many days it took me to get through a pound of greens. But Velda got enough of an idea to be able to go shopping. She will work out what works best for her after a little bit of experimentation. Guest guest
The point I am making is when starting out the dilemma for me was do I want green smoothies as a meal replacement for a meal supplement. If you are going for a supplement and you want to lose or maintain weight you need to look at the servings and calories in your smoothie. If you are making them for a meal replacement you want the extra calories. While most green smoothie recipes are great for you some can have a fair amount of calories if you consume all the servings in a recipe. I drink green smoothies as a supplement to maintain weight and I try to make 2 servings, one for now and one for later in the day. Guest guest
I am drinking a quart of smoothie a day. Â Sometimes it takes me until dinner to drink it all, other days I'm starving in the morning and drink it all at 8:00 am.Janet
Guest guest
What I did when I started my "Green Smoothie" habit 4 years ago, was buy a large bunch of greens (if sold in bunches :-) or a large container of spinach, and work on using it up, and when it was gone try to buy a different kind (or two) next time. If it were me, I wouldn't worry so much about getting a certain amount of greens in per day (at least at the beginning) just make the Green Smoothies taste good :-) As you drink them over time, you can slowly increase the greens to your taste. If you try to go with too many greens too soon, 1) your body might rebel :-), and 2) you might not like the taste and the habit won't be one that you will WANT to continue. If you make them taste (and feel) good, your body will naturally start craving more of the greens. That is my .4 (two cents with inflation accounted for ;-) Blessings,Lea Ann SavageSatellite Beach, FL(321) 773-7088 (home)(321-961-9219 (cell)))><'>www.VitamixLady.comwww..com<))>< On Mar 4, 2012, at 9:38 PM, Velda wrote: Thanks Janet. Then for lunch I had an energy soup (those recipes last a few days), a snack of kale chips in the afternoon. Then a salad for dinner where I use more greens. I have mostly cut out all bread except when I go out with friends. When you plan to eat mostly vegetables and fruit, there is not room for junk food. I made Rene's kale crackers and they are amazingly wonderful on page 120. I eat 3 or 4 of them with my soup or salad- more greens in my diet. Good luck. I am having so much fun making new recipes from Rene's book and from this group. Janet
Guest guest
If you meant this for me, trust me Lea Ann, I can tolerate greens. I was, until maybe last Nov, drinking a green smoothie for breakfast and lunch and was good with that. I have just not planned so I can do smoothies daily. I did them when I happened to have stuff to do them. Mostly daily for almost a year. Just had some stuff interfere here at home and stopped and am interested in actually planning so I can do smoothies daily. Guest guest
Velda, I agree with Lea Ann. You need to start with a few leaves in your smoothies and go up from there. I am so competitive with myself (not others) that I challenged myself to eat more greens in February since I was already eating one green smoothie a day. There are days I don't get a bunch of greens in because I'm not so hungry. I'm happy I added more greens in my diet. Two steps forward one step back. Today I waked up with a yeast infection. Now I don't eat any bread with yeast, no sugar products, no processed foods, only smoothies with fruit or an occasional apple with nut butter on it. So, I was surprised. I guess I'll cut out the fruit in my smoothies for a few days and eat salad smoothies and cold green soups. Janet
Guest guest
Thanks Janet, but I already am used to quite a bit of greens in a smoothie. I have been doing this off and on for years, but want to change it from off and on again to daily habit. I am quite comfortable with a VM jar stuffed with kale and fruits and other veggies. But thanks for the suggestions. Velda On 3/5/2012 7:43 AM, Janet Fowler wrote: > Velda, > I agree with Lea Ann. You need to start with a few leaves in your smoothies and go up from there.
