Guest guest
Hello everyone, At first I wasnt going to respond to this discussion since I have commented on it before, but I would like to add something. To the newbies, my husband and 3 kids have ocd and depression. I let people know what is going on in our home on a need to know basis. My neighbours know that sometimes we need their help and patience, the schools know, because i depend on them to be my eyes and ears, and some friends know. My experience with friends of ours and our kids friends, is that it all depends on a maturity level. Some people just arent ready to accept others that are different. Many kids are on meds, so the attitude tends to be: oh, ritalin! Sometimes the kids correct them, sometimes they dont. Around here ocd and depression are the 'norm'. Our discussions and daily routines are based on ocd being part of our lives. We will be doing CBT soon, but up until now, only meds and support from the kids psychiatrist. What is the most important part of our 'disclosing' to others is that it is done with humour and kindness. We stress the seriousness of our situation, but dont make it sound like a terminal disease. In fact, with some people, I point out ocd kind of symptoms that they do, and use that as an introduction. For example: oh, you double checked your locked door! or You are obsessive about how you keep your desk! Just dont forget to smile so that you dont frighten them, though!!! I didnt mean to go on so long, but its late and my thoughts arent clear! I'll probably continue another time... I returned home from LA tonight to hundreds of emails!!!!!!!!! take care all....... wendy in canada
