Hello Aspergillus website subscribers and welcome to another update.

Conference abstracts deadline

My first task is a reminder that the 2nd Advances confereagainst Aspergillosis

nce in Athens is due shortly after Christmas on February 22nd-25th. The

deadline for abstracts is in 2 weeks on 15th December 2005 - so get them in as

soon as possible (http://www.aaa2006.org/2006/abstract.php).

Pillows - a hotbed of fungal spores

You may have noticed media coverage of successful research funded by the Fungal

Research Trust. Scientists at Manchester University recently completed a study

on fungal growth in different types of bedpillows (see the paper here ). It

seems 'natural' feather pillows will host fewer fungal spores over time compared

with synthetic materials. The is a copy of the Press release at

http://www.aspergillus.man.ac.uk/homepagenew/fungipillowsfinal.pdf, and it was

featured nationally in the UK and all over the world on TV and in newspapers

(28000 links in Google)

The Aspergillus website - additions and developments

With regard to the Aspergillus website (http://www.aspergillus.man.ac.uk) there

have been several developments since the last update:

1.. We have a new section entitled 'Secondary Metabolites' as part of the

Scientific Information division

.. Here we give information on some 350 metabolites, with more information being

added as it becomes available

2.. There is a new way to keep in touch with news additions and developments

at the Aspergillus website. As mentioned in the last update we now have several

pages (and plans for more) which can be read by RSS NewsReaders. If you run one

of the free newsreaders (and these will be incorporated into web browsers in the

near future) on your PC you can subscribe to these newsfeeds and be

automatically informed if anything new is added to the website (for more details

see http://www.aspergillus.man.ac.uk/rss/rsshelp.php). We have added feeds for

articles and treatments so far, with plans for an RSS feed for updates very

soon.

3.. Several new slide presentations have been added

(http://www.aspergillus.man.ac.uk/education/slides.htm). These are

'Presentations from the TIMM meeting in Berlin' and 'Presentations from the

British Mycological Society'.

4.. New case histories 045 (aspergilloma) and 046 (disseminating invasive

aspergillosis with CML and GVHD.

5.. Dozens of complete articles have been added

(http://www.aspergillus.man.ac.uk/secure/articles/index.php) in PDF format, and

continue to be added on a weekly/biweekly basis.

6.. Mycotoxins - EU statement on Patulin safety in food added to the articles

section - see here.

7.. Historical papers dated pre 1960 - several added on a variety of subjects

- see them here listed in order of most recent additions.

8.. The Aspergillus support group for sufferers of Aspergillus illnesses

continues to be highly active and now has 430 members

For a complete, detailed listing of all additions go to the updates pages at

http://www.aspergillus.man.ac.uk/homepagenew/siteupdate.htm

New slideshow from FRT conference

Many readers will also be interested a document recently uploaded to the Fungal

Research Trusts' website (http://www.fungalresearchtrust.org). Dr Theresa

Lamagni has contributed the slides of her talk to the Fungal Research Trust -

sponsored conference in June 2005. The talk was entitled 'Trends in Fungal

Disease in the UK' and looks at roles, functions and remit of the HPA, national

surveillance of fungal infections, trends in invasive fungal infections and

future surveillance developments. You will find the conference at

http://www.fungalresearchtrust.org/FRT%20meeting%202005.htm .

Thank you for your continued interest in the Aspergillus website
