Guest guest
Fletch, Re: " Why do tests require a prescription? " This is the bane of my health care qwest. I've been trying to get tested for system fungal infection for well over a year now without any success, starting in spring 2005. This past spring I finally got someone to test me for systemic Candida and the test came back positive, and doctor treated me and I test negative now. I said to doctor, I still have symtoms I associated with Candida though. He said you may have another fungal infection also, something that can't be tested. Well, aspergillus is second most common and he doesn't do tests for that. Tests are available and this was what I first thought I was infected with since I had aspergillus growing in basement where I was working and also cleaned up myself without any guard, WHILE on some medicine that had a side affect of suppressing my immune system and have been sick ever since. So, still can't get tested. If I had taken a systemic fungal medicine it might have taken care of aspergillus. Doctor offered it but I asked for Nystatin instead since systemic fungal medicine it is known can be hard or cause damage to liver, and I wanted to try the gentlist approach first. Nystatin isn't absorbed into the bloodstream, so only treats the GI tract, where most Candida is anyway. I asked could I now go on a regime of the sytemic fungal medicine since I still have fungal infection symptoms and he said no, now that you test negative (low count, not no count) to Candida, I can't, so back to square one on posible other infection. Interestingly test was done WHILE I was on the Nystatin. I asked should I go off the Nystatin prior to the test and he said no. I am going to ask him to test me after I have been off of it for 5-6 months to see if it stayed away. I'm not convinced. Anyway, this not being able to get tested without a prescription, really makes it impossible to investigate yourself if you are sick. You have to convince a doctor, which I've found to be like convincing a person who is completely deaf, or convincing a person who is completely incompetent. However bottom line is I really only go to traditional doctors for 'testing' now since they don't seem to offer anything helpful as to a cure, but at least I can get tests paid for by my insurance, so that is their only role in my life. If I didn't need a prescription for testing, they would rarely if ever see me. I assume this is WHY a prescription is needed. Things have gotten worse on this front. It used to be once tested, you could have results of tests sent to you merely by asking. Now testing labs will NOT mail results to you and ALSO will not even talk to you about test results. If they are asked anything, they say " tests results were sent to your doctor and you must see him with any questions you have " . HOWEVER once you have a test done, you may call the doctors office and ask them to MAIL you a copy WITHOUT seeing the doctor and many doctors will mail you test result but it is up to their office policy. My doctor requires that I come in IN PERSON to pick it up - ridiculous!! This is just to make it an unattractive alternative to seeing the doctor. I guess many people would then think, " I might as well see the doctor then, as office visit after insurance is usually small amount of money (however doctor gets alot, for 5 minutes it's alot anyway). " Anyway, this is the game. I think rules of lab to lock patient out is an effort to offset effect of internet to people treating themselves. I think we all have the right to treat ourselves with over the counter or food products or what have you, but doctors and pharmacy companies lose a lot. There is a reputable testing lab that people can use but the test cost is not picked up by insurance unless it is prescribed by a doctor so cost is yours. I've used it before. Only thing is it just offers pretty basic tests and nothing like tests for infectious diseases. You can get your cholesterol checked, stool test, etc. --- In , " fletch_82000 " <fletch_8@h...> wrote: > > Hi Loni, > > I don't know if those other things help, I really don't know if CSM > does for that matter.
