Dear and all,

has been on Prozac for about 8 months. She has done very well

on it, although we have had to raise it several times over the last 5 months.

She has not had any of the " hyperness " that others have described. Her

teacher immediately noticed a change in school. She was less withdrawn and

able to socialize with her peers. My one concern is that she had gained

weight despite no noticeable change in her eating habits. Our dr. felt that

she should start with Prozac as my mother and I both take it for depression

with good results. A few weeks ago, we saw a return of the OCD contamination

issues as well as that frantic, anxious little girl who was concurrently

depressed. Her doctor raised the level of the Prozac, but did warn us that

we may need to switch her meds during the summer. Now I am having panic

attackes just thinking about going off one med and starting another!

While I don't use paradoxical thinking, per se, I use a lot of humor

with . We try to make jokes about it. when we can, so that we all get a

chance to lighten up. It also gives our kids permission to kid about it and

accept the OCD as part of themselves, just as if I cracked jokes about my

freckles or my husband's balding head. (Oops! we still aren't supposed to

touch the sacred receding hairline).

I am seriously thiking of going to the OCD conference in DC. Kathy

and others, do you have more details or a web site where I can obtain the

details? If enough of us go, we should meet somewhere that is CLEAN, NOT

NEW, WITH SMOOTH FABRIC ON THE CHAIRS, STERILIZED BATHROOMS THAT HAVE LOTS

AND LOTS OF SOAP, AND A STAFF WITH A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR!

Hi Gail,

Your post about finding a place to meet that is clean, not new, etc. made

me laugh out loud. I also laughed out loud during lunch at the OCSDA

conference when there weren't enough tables available for lunch and Diane

at OCSDA tried to free up tables by asking Board members and speakers " who

hadn't yet touched anything " at their place setting to join her in the

restaurant! Maybe she didn't mean to address it as a contamination issue,

but I thought it was pretty funny. (I think I was the only one laughing

though!)

Take care,

in S.D.

HI Gail:

Please check out the OCF website, htttp://www.ocfoundation.org for

information and on-line registration for the conference July 9-11. About

the specialized hotel rooms I am sure they will be comfortable. We learned

at the OCSDA conference that the hotel staff had been given " sensitivity "

training prior to our arrival. I still had to give the cleaning staff an

extra large tip for cleaning up after the kids who had used all the towels,

soap, shampoo, etc. etc. and made a big mess.

Like you we joke much more about OCD than receding hairlines. Some things

just aren't funny yet. Steve has also gained weight on his Paxil, it is

getting a little better because he is exercising more but pudgy is still

there. Hard for a pre-teen to handle.

HOpe to see you in DC. Take care, aloha, Kathy (H)
