Return of mold forces Elbert County to transfer inmates

The Elbert County Sheriff's Office will evacuate all inmates from

the county jail due to ongoing problems with mold.

The inmates will be transferred to the Washington County Jail until

further notice. The evacuation follows other mold problems with the

county's justice center.

In September 2004, the justice center was ordered shut down after a

worker got sick from mold. The center underwent a two-month, $60,000

cleanup and reopened. But the mold resurfaced, and earlier this

month officials moved all court and probation business to the

County facility in Castle Rock.
