Guest guest
Dear OCD Parenting List Members: Hello. I'm not a member of any other lists, so I'm not certain if replying to this e-mail address is the way to introduce myself. If not, please advise. My daughter, who will be nine soon, was recently diagnosed with OCD by a psychologist. She has been referred to a psychiatrist for confirmation of the diagnosis and possible medication. The appointment is in July. In the mean time, the psychologist is intervening with cognitive-behavioral therapy. My daughter's symptoms (fear of swallowing own saliva--currently resolved, hand washing---currently resolved, fear of eating anything she's touched, intolerance of any discussion of illness/outer space/general world news) began shortly after a bout with strep throat (2/99), therefore, I'm especially interested in any research and treatment related to PANDAS. I asked the psychologist to contact NIMH (Dr. Swedo) in Bethesda, MD regarding the " blood filtering " article I read. I'm reluctant to commit to long-term therapy and meds for her if there are other viable options to consider. I would appreciate any suggestions related to who/where (nation wide) to turn to for the most promising treatment for the PANDAS type OCD. I'm also looking for good books for her, for us, and for her new teacher this Fall. Thank you!! Rae Anne

We have 2 children, a son named and a daughter named Kelsey. Our son is 25, married and a 6th grade teacher. Our daughter will be 10 in Sept. very bright and has OCD. I work second shift as a supervisor in a veneer mill and my wife works for the school district. We live in a small town (Pop. 1200) in central WI. We're really having a difficult time with this. Kelsey is on medication Paxil ) and is responding well with no major side effects yet and she is also seeing a therapist and seems to be very willing to work to over come this disorder and has made a lot of progress. She was diagnosed the early part of May 99 but looking back I'm sure she was exhibiting the biginning symptoms of OCD for a long time before that. Her teacher demonstrated an extrodinary amount of compassion and understanding even though her knowledge in this area is minimal. The school district appears to be very supportive but is lacking in knowledge and the expertise needed to deal effectively with this problem. We would appreciate any help that is available and any sources of info that you might know of so we can properly educate the school district and ourselves. Thanks, Terry

Guest guest
a, I am sooooo glad that you made the decision to join us. I have learned so much from the wonderful people on this list, and I'm sure you will too. I didn't realize that you were homeschooling or I would have also recommended the ocdandhomeschooling list (at onelist also). Just go to onelist, log in, go to member and type in ocdandhomeschooling. What is your 3 yo's name? I'm looking forward to learning more about you and your children. In addition to (13), I have a 15 yo daughter, . Guest guest
a, Welcome to the list. I am the mother of a 15y/o son who has OCD. There are other issues we are dealing with also, like depression, and we feel that the diagnosis is still not 100%. I found this list last Apr. and have used it for gathering info. and venting. I have learned so much from the group. Even though I can't keep up and respond to everyone, I am in awe of the strength and love everyone has. I also have an almost 13y/o daughter, and a husband who is supportive. We are trying to find our way in this often confusing road we are on. I realize that patience is the best thing that I can have. Welcome. Vivian in Wa. St.
Guest guest
Hi there a!! You'll love the support you'll recieve from this group! Some of the kids are homeschooled, others have similar diagnosis and the ages of the ocders range from 4 (i think) to maybe 18!! To help us identify you, can you add something to your name?? If you add something like where you live, other people from your area may be able to contact you directly with local resources!!! take care, and welcome! wendy in canada (mom of 3 ocders + 1 hubby!) Guest guest
My name is C. and I have a child, 12 years old, with OCD. We have his obsessions, compulsions and anxiety in check with medication so are now working on a better social understanding. He takes 100mg of Clomiprimine every day and takes adderol for add. I am joining the list because there is really no one who has an understanding of the things we go through. C.

Guest guest
HI , Welcome to your new best friends! this is a great list for practical and professional advise and emotional support. We have so much to share and what is amazing about this group is that no matter how difficult things are at home, we all still generously support each other! , many of us go through a stage where we dont know what's going on, and are concerned that our kids wont get the treatment that they need. Where do you live? What kind of treatment is being made available to you? What about family support do you have? Taking care of yourself is very high priority here. Excellent on-line resources are the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation (OCF) at www.ocdfoundation.org/ and the Obsessive Compulsive and Spectrum Disorder Association (OCSDA) on the west coast www.ocdhelp.org/ My 13 yo daughter is very active on the ocdteens list. You can find it through the OCSDA listed above. Personally , I have 3 kids and a husband with ocd and depression. In brief, my 16yo is living in a group home due to his agressive tendancies, my 13 is terrific, and practices a lot of self help, and the youngest is 10 and we're not to sure what to do with her!! We got our diagnosis only 3 years ago, and my husband was the last to be diagnosed!! It would help if you would attach something to your name so we know which you are! take care, wendy in canada
Guest guest
- My 8 yr old son was diagnosed with OCD last Jan. I too, had a difficult time dealing with it. I believe that it is the most difficult thing I have had to deal with so far in my life. It is slowly getting much better. Most of the info and help I have received has been right here, from the list. The book I have most appreciated is OCD IN Children and Adolescents by March and Mulle. elizabeth Re: Welcome to onelist >From: KARENH512@... > >My name is . I have a 13 year old son who has OCD. Guest guest
Dear Louis, Thank you for your kind welcome to the list. I live in rural New Hampshire and really don't know any parents of kids with OCD. Two years ago I joined another list but it was geared more to people with OCD rathen then parents of. I would just like to know how respectful of confidentiality the list tends to be. I am happy to share our family story but just need a bit of reassurance. Thanks, Patti -
Guest guest
Patti, Welcome to our list. Dont worry about confidentiality here. Most of us actually live in areas where there isnt any one to talk to about ocd - so who would we tell, anyway?!! We all have so many experiences to share, and at times need a shoulder to cry on. We all are here for and to give support. We have professionals who validate our actions, and share their expertise. Dr. Chansky regularly looks in on the list. Many of us have been looking for ways to live as a family with our ocder, but are struggling. Ocd came to stay with us 3 years ago. We now have found that my 3 children and my husband have ocd and depression. This list helps me deal with regular struggles ranging from giving up custody of our 16yr old son in order to have him live in a group home, to advocating for my 13yo to move out of a portable classroom which was making her contamination issues unbearable. My 10yo is so full of anxiety that today she complained of a tummy ache all day because I worked from 9am - 11pm and she didnt see me except at breakfast. Medications? I think we have tried just about all! Patti, please feel welcome here, we appreciate everyones opinions. Our number one rule is: TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!!! best wishes, wendy in canada
Guest guest
Hi Patti! Believe me, we all want confidentiality here!! I believe this list is very confidential. It has been a great help for me and gets me through days where I am so frustrated that I just want to give up. Some stories you'll read and think, " Wow, is my kid living with them?!! " I wish I had found this list earlier, but I'm glad I found it!!! Welcome to the list. Guest guest
Hi Patti, I am glad that you have joined our community. Our list is private and can only be accessed by members. To my knowledge we have not experienced any violations of list privacy. All of us share our stories and experiences for the benefit of others who may be walking over ground that we have already travelled. Also many of our problems are shared in common, but many of us benefit from the originality of others in their efforts to help their children in their struggle with OCD. Take care and keep posting. Guest guest
Hi all, I just wanted to clear up why I was asking about confidentiality. It is not because we keep OCD a secret. We are very open about OCD. I was concerned because of other issues that I just feel very nervous about sharing. In time I am sure I will get over it. Thank you to all the people with the kind welcomes. I will introduce myself more fully as soon as I am at my home computer. Knowing I can talk to other moms and dads is so encouraging. I am glad I have found you all. God bless, Patti
