Guest guest
Hi : I managed to find this in " The Fragrance Guide: Masculine Notes " by Muller: Royal Spice Top Notes:allspice, nutmeg (main scent), orange, lemon Middle Notes:carnation, cinnamon, black pepper (main scents), geranium, fern, rose, ylang-ylang Base Notes: vanilla, heliotrope If I was to try and replicate this scent, I would combine: 2 drops allspice e.o. 2 drops nutmeg e.o. 1 drop orange e.o. 1 drop lemon e.o. Mix these together and set aside. This is your Top Note. Separately, combine: 2 drops carnation f.o. 2 drops cinnamon e.o. or f.o. 1 drop black pepper e.o. 1 drop geranium e.o. 1 drop male fern e.o. (if available) 1 drop rose f.o. 1 drop ylang-ylang e.o. Mix and set aside. This is your Middle Note. Separately, combine: 2 drops vanilla f.o. 2 drops heliotrope f.o. This is your Base Note Now take 3 drops of the combined Top note, 2 drops of the combined Middle note and 1 drop Base note and mix these in a vial. Dip a wooden toothpick or strip of paper in the mixture and let dry. Sniff. Is this close to what you want? If not, go back and add (for example) a drop or orange e.o. to the Top Note, a drop of carnation f.o. to the middle note and an additional drop of vanilla f.o. to the Base note. Recombine the notes using the 3-2-1 formula. Be sure and keep track of the number of drops of each oil as you blend. To make a cologne with the blend, combine: 8 parts ethyl alcohol base (vodka, denatured, grain) 1 part scent blend Let this mellow about a month and rebottle. > Being new to the list, I'm not sure how this all works but here goes. Guest guest
Hi Cat, I've got a couple of follow up questions. Except where noted, is it generally not a good idea to use fo's when eo's are called for and vice versa? It sounds like fo's are " watered down " eo's and thus not necessarily interchangeable. I've been intrigued by all of the soap recipes flying around but I need a basic primer on the soap making process. Any good books or pamphlets out there? I was thinking of making a soap for shaving. If I come up with the right soap recipe, can I add some of the royal spice scent blend to it for fragrance? Thanks for your help,

Guest guest
Hi : I haven't had a problem using f.o.'s and e.o.'s together. Fragrance oils are synthetic replicas of scents found in nature, and oftentimes are the only thing available...For instance, most fruit scents, musk, ambergris, and some floral scents cannot be obtained in essential oil form. A good synthetic is then used. Perfumes like Chanel Number 5 consist almost entirely of synthetic scents. I am not a soaper, the soaps I have " made " consist of melt and pour. I do have a couple of recipes for shaving soap, shaving cream and other men's toiletries using pre-made soap. Let me know if you are interested in these. There is a trick to adding fragrance to soap (not melt and pour) to keep it from siezing...perhaps one of the soapers on this list can be of more help? > I've got a couple of follow up questions. Guest guest
, I also have no problem mixing fragrance and essential oils. I'm not a soapmaker, I got hooked on crafting fragrance after reading " Perfumes, Splashes & Colognes " by M. Booth. My mother loves Gardenia, so I used f.o. for that and vanilla f.o.--the ylang ylang, sandalwood and jasmin in this blend were e.o.'s. My mom loves it---Colleen Happy Trails....
