Guest guest
My daughter has asked me to post this message because her attempt to sign up for this evening failed. I am the mother of Luke (aged 4) who was diagnosed ASD 21 months ago. He has been on a GFCF diet for 18 months and we have been running the Son Rise programme for 5 months, during which we have seen improvements in speech (now about 200 words), eye contact and social interaction. Apart from his lack of speech Luke's main problem is his very poor diet. I have been doing alot of research in the last few weeks and I am convinced that Luke's gut is in a bad way. For a long period of time Luke suffered from terrible constipation where he would not pass a stool for a week to 10 days - and that was a regular occurence. He has dark rings under his eyes and is very pale. (His iron count is 4.0 and has no friendly bacteria in him) In the last 4-5 weeks Luke has suddenly regressed - he seems more autistic than ever - his language is disappearing, he makes strange noises, he is more controlling and rigid with routine, walks on tiptoes and he is often hyper. I started Luke on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet 3 days ago. To me it makes sense that Luke may be having a problem with breaking down complex carbohydrates - and he does only crave these. As his diet has been so poor for so long i.e. only complex carbohydrates - the build up of this effect might be having serious effect in his brain - which would explain this regression. In the last 3 days Luke has hardly eaten anything - as we have had to take away all the food he normally eats. We have constantly offered lots of different types of food - but he has refused them. Luke has also become even more controlling. Today Luke has just sat on my knee all day and grissled. My guess is that this is some sort of withdrawal - please has anyone had this sort of experience? How long did it take before he/she got better? I am so worried about his lack of eating and I am praying that he will eat tomorrow. I would love to hear from other people who have been through this. This has been the darkest day yet for me. Nicola
Guest guest
Hi Nicola, Have you managed to get on at all? There is a group called Pecanbread which is specifically for the SCD diet. I saw your posts previously (I think your dad posted recently). I have actually been thinking about your son and the problems you are having in relation to his diet. If he is hardly eating at all - Could he be starving yeast/ or going through a die off period? alternatively could he be going through another withdrawal period to the remaining foods that may have been causing him a problem. If you are struggling to get on the - do you want me to copy this message accross to the SCD sites for you to see what the group comes up with. .. Guest guest
Hi Jane, We are familiar with Pecanbread. Your two suggestions (yeast die-off and food withdrawal) are the obvious ones. I think what my daughter wanted to know is how long this not-eating period is likely to last. I know every ASD child is different but it is so hard when Luke keeps saying "hungry" and then "no" to everything he is offered. Please copy the message. Any advice we can get will be welcome. Guest guest
Hello Nicola, I understand your worries with your child's eating.Once I was in the similar situation.I wantedto try SCD diet but I made many food changes in a short time and my son had very high temperature on the 3rd day. I think rapid changes may cause reject behaviours.Perhaps it would be better changing the diet slowly and it may be much safer. Best wishes nevin

Some parents have experienced this when they start the diet.Hopefully they will write in with what happened and what they did.He may be experiencing some die off symptoms and not feel like eating. Epsom salt baths and/or activated charcoal may help ease them. There is a electrolyte mix at http://pecanbread.com/recipes.html under "Drinks" to help prevent dehydration. You can also use diluted legal juices.Legal juices:Tropicana Pure premium OJDole pineapple juiceHeinz and 's Tomato juiceThe Knudsen's *Just Juice* line (not the rest of their products)Kedeem grape juiceWelch's Grape juice Re: Worried mum/SCD diet problems Hello Nicola,I understand your worries with your child's eating.Once I was in the similar situation.I wantedto try SCD diet but I made many food changes in a short time and my son had very high temperature on the 3rd day.I think rapid changes may cause reject behaviours.Perhaps it would be better changing the diet slowly and it may be much safer.Best wishesnevin
