They want action against mold ...

Story by Ward Email | Bio

West Virginia Media

People say below two portable units that sit behind Point Harmony

Elementary school in Cross Lanes is an unwelcome guest. It's mold.

Though inside it may not appear that anything is wrong -- pictures,

which show another view -- tell a different story.

But Principal Darlena Reynolds says, " There's no reason for alarm at

this time and according to the state, none of the results are at the

action level. "

Action is exactly what Boley wants. She has three

daughters in the school.

" Black mold is very dangerous especially to kids, " says Boley. " It

can cause their lungs to hemorhage, it can cause lung cancer,

asthma, or in people who already have asthma, it can cause more

asthma attacks. "

13 News was shown pictures of how water backs up in the yard after a

heavy rain. Our cameras got shots of holes in the portable units

where the water gets in.

" By the time the end of the day comes around my throat is sore. My

eyes are watering. I had two guests in there about 20 minutes today

and they were having symptoms, " says Ann Nichols, who teaches

second grade.

Parents say they're also worried about the food their kids are

eating since there was a mold problem here in the kitchen. In fact,

the day of the meeting the walls were scraped and painted.

That further worries parents and teachers who say that's not the way

to deal with it. Scraping makes the mold airborne which can cause

more problems.

" The officials in Kanawha County don't understand the seriousness of

mold and how to remediate it, " says Nichols.

On January 17 the state and local school board are expected to come

to the school and look for themselves. And people are hoping for a

real fix.
