Guest guest
Regarding chiropractic health screens: I was talking with some chiropractors in an online forum about public spinal screenings. Some were embarrassed by seeing chiros. Doing them outside of Walmart while others were so excited that they didn't care where they did them. Greg Stanley of Whitehall Management, spoke here a few years ago and mentioned that even screens set up in health clubs, professionally done, with a SAM unit, free standing full color backdrops, and training by a professional management company, have an element of rejection. The person walks toward you, you are excited and expectant, they look like they are going to stop by and have you examine them, and...they walk around you. OUCH! I hate this feeling just want to go to the clinic and treat patients! Why do I have to market and sell chiropractic. MD¹s don¹t have to go through this! It¹s an embarrassment! Oh! To be pre-validated by my family, my friends, and the general public like MD¹s are! When you change your focus to something different, you get a different result. I try to consider screens and guest lectures like this: ³out of all the people who walk past me today, I wonder if the universe, fate, or God will bless me with an encounter with someone whom I will impact their lives so much that they will be grateful that they met me 20 years from now². I owe it to them to show up as the most focused, enthusiastic, and inspired chiropractor. (Of course, this can gradually transfer to my day to day work in the clinic which impacts patients, staff, and even the UPS guy, leading to not having to do outside screenings but by then [God being the trickster that he is...] I don¹t mind doing screenings because I AM ON A MISSION and I will do impromptu spinal screenings at my kid's hockey game, my grandma's funeral, and my dentist's waiting room!) Anyway, it gets the focus off my own fear of rejection and makes my face look expectant, excited, and what do you know (!) attractive. It really helps to have a vision of chiropractic bigger than NMS care of back pain and headaches. I personally got ³chiropractic religion² from a scientific course in wellness certification from Chestnut, MS, DC. They do a 4 module series put on by the ICA all over the place. Since attending, I am still really good with NMS conditions but I also help people change their current health and future lifestyle by including changes in how they EAT, MOVE, and THINK; a scientific approach to comprehensive wellness care with chiropractic as its basis. Guest guest
No he doesn’t. He teaches a wellness certification course; no practice management focus. In increased belief in chiropractic on an intellectual level helps with any marketing endeavor. My point is that if you develop a passion about chiropractic born of a scientific understanding, doing screenings, outside lectures, or any other face-to-face method to build your practice will be less painful and more exciting. If you don’t need to get out of the clinic to build your practice, more power to you. ( E. Abrahamson, D.C.) Guest guest
Understood , But there is a huge difference between accepting an invitation to speak at the local hospital to the staff physicians about chiropractic care or the local Rotary Club, or Chamber, or whatever civic or professional group….giving a evidence based review of our training, superior skill sets, why what we do works, or an evidence based review of “chiropractic wellness” such as Dr. Chestnut’s and standing between the underwear section and the cans of tuna fish at the local Target store doing “spinal screenings.” Within the context or back drop of a “Health Fair” yes anything else has always seemed extremely unprofessional to me….but hey y that’s just me…..whatthehelldoIknowanywho! Guest guest
What is the difference between a D.C. doing a professional, educational spinal screening and the free blood pressure screenings, cholesterol screenings and discount flu shots so commonly seen? If the intent is increasing public awareness and knowledge of how the body really works and providing an opportunity to the public that is not otherwise available to learn about Chiropractic I don't see the harm. Perhaps those that are uneasy with the concept are not as secure in their self-image as they would like to believe. Further more, if we think that the survival of the profession is dependent upon convincing others such as M.D.s, PhD.s etc of our value I think we are mistaken. I think our survival, historically, as been dependent upon grass roots support of enthusiastic chiropractic patients and I don't think that has changed. The only time we will have the support of allopathic medecine is when they figure out how to patent and bottle the benefit of a chiropracti adjustment. Best Regards M. Guest guest
Good point, Vern. I've also noticed the people doing the med screenings are not the MDs. I actually used to have a nice little job while I was in school going out to factories to draw blood for chem screens. I certainly wasn't any kind of licensed medical professional. I had gotten my training in the army. I think the well trained CA is the better approach. But gosh, whatthehelldoIknoweither! Guest guest
How did you build your practice, Vern? ( E. Abrahamson, D.C.) Conversly I've often thought that having a well trained and professional looking CA/CAs performing these spinal screenings and providing informational literature and sceduling free consultations and examinations with the DC back at his/her clinic would be a more professional method by which to do this stuff.....but again whatthehelldoIknow! Cheers, Vern Saboe Re: Spinal screenings and chiropractic self image What is the difference between a D.C. doing a professional, educational spinal screening and the free blood pressure screenings, cholesterol screenings and discount flu shots so commonly seen? If the intent is increasing public awareness and knowledge of how the body really works and providing an opportunity to the public that is not otherwise available to learn about Chiropractic I don't see the harm. Perhaps those that are uneasy with the concept are not as secure in their self-image as they would like to believe. Further more, if we think that the survival of the profession is dependent upon convincing others such as M.D.s, PhD.s etc of our value I think we are mistaken. I think our survival, historically, as been dependent upon grass roots support of enthusiastic chiropractic patients and I don't think that has changed. Guest guest
Hello Vern, I had to chime in on this. I had done way to many screenings when I was in school for other doctors ( about 2 a week). Some of the events were less than desirable (in a pharmacy), but others were great. I never viewed it as using “charlatan type techniques”. When I see a booth for a Dentist or Physical Therapist, I don’t think they are using charlatan type techniques. I always saw it as they are out there meeting people. The majority of the people we would meet either where thinking about seeing a Chiropractor, or had never considered a Chiropractor for whatever health problems they were suffering with. I have had booths next to Vascular Surgeons, Optometrists, many Dentists and Physical Therapists. And yes the doctors and PT’s were actually there with their staff. In a perfect world you would open your doors and people would flood in, because they would already know what we do and how we can help them. I don’t think we are there yet. Guest guest
Understood , But now I will ask you a similar question. When your booth was next to those that held the dentists, optometrists, physical therapists, and even vascular surgeons was the venue in the middle of the local Walmart, Target, Fred Meyers etc. or was the venue that of a health fair/healthcare fair etc.??? The later of which I think is appropriate if done in a professional manner which I’m sure you did. Actually it’s over on the side but they put drug stores there for only one reason: it’s where people are. (Granted they are legal drugs, but they are poisoning our fellow citizens and very few people are yelling “wake up!”) ( E. Abrahamson, D.C.) Guest guest
OK all ya'll I can't stands it no more cause I can't stands it no more. If you are ' hawking ' Chiropractic it will not matter if you are doing it in your clinic/wal mart/ local club ... whatever.. it will come across as unprofessional On the other hand if you are being professional and there to ' serve' , that also will come across. I applaud everyone who is there to serve and educate the public about true health, in whatever format they feel is appropriate ! Guest guest
Perhaps Vern has had an experience that left a very negative feeling regarding screenings. About 15 years ago my wife and I walked into a major big box store. In the middle of the first isle was a chiro doing screenings. On the view box was an underexposed, poorly developed film. In the middle of the film was an obvious large metallic belt buckle. An under-wire bra with 4 rows of hooks was also clearly visible. When I approached the people managing the screening they were very put out that I had the audacity to point out the shortcomings of the film. How many other healthcare professionals and lay persons walked by and painted you and I with that brush? My earnest hope is that those kinds of screenings are no longer being done! Peace, Larry L. Guest guest
I think if there is a venue such as a HEALTH FAIR, it changes things a bit. It's relevent. Setting up a spinal screening in a more nebulous event such as outside a strip mall or a general street fair etc. is where it appears to be more charlatan in nature. Look, building a chiropractic practice is NOT easy, and we should stay within our own comfort zones while trying to do so. We should also be mindful that we represent an entire profession when we are out there networking or attempting to bring in business. If it feels bad, it probably looks that way too. There are other advertising techniques that leave a similar taste in the mouth that as a profession, i believe, we should avoid. Whether or not a certain technique works is beyond the point. The objective of attaining more patients in the office may have been acheived, but how many people were turned off just the same? ph Medlin, DCSpine Tree Chiropractic1627 NE Alberta St.Portland, OR 97211 Re: Spinal screenings> > > and chiropractic self image> > > > > > > > > > > > What is the difference between a D.C. doing a> > > professional, educational spinal screening and> the> > > free blood pressure screenings, cholesterol> > > screenings and discount flu shots so commonly> > seen?> > > If the intent is increasing public awareness and> > > knowledge of how the body really works and> > providing> > > an opportunity to the public that is not> otherwise> > > available to learn about Chiropractic I don't> see> > > the harm. Guest guest
I think if there is a venue such as a HEALTH FAIR, it changes things a bit. It's relevant. The objective of attaining more patients in the office may have been achieved, but how many people were turned off just the same? ph Medlin, DCSpine Tree Chiropractic1627 NE Alberta St.Portland, OR 97211 Re: Spinal screenings> > > and chiropractic self image> > > > > > > > > > > > What is the difference between a D.C. doing a> > > professional, educational spinal screening and> the> > > free blood pressure screenings, cholesterol> > > screenings and discount flu shots so commonly> > seen?> > > If the intent is increasing public awareness and> > > knowledge of how the body really works and> > providing> > > an opportunity to the public that is not> otherwise> > > available to learn about Chiropractic I don't> see> > > the harm. Guest guest
Not to mention putting confidential health records on view to the public!!!!! There was a chiropractic office on 181st in Gresham years ago, soon after I got out of school, that had an x-ray view box in a window facing the street with someones films on display. I couldn't believe anyone would have the complete lack of common sense (and professional ethics) to put private records up for passersby to see. I was introduced to chiropractic when a student from WSCC was at a college recruitment thing at MHCC in the late 70's. He watched me walking by in obvious pain (obvious to him, but not to the MD's who told me there was nothing wrong with me after an OTJ injury when I was 20 years old.....) and asked me if my back hurt. He told me about chiropractic and eventually helped me to feel better after at least 2 years of unremitting pain and inability to work. That serendipitous event led me to this fantastic career. I have not done any spinal screenings or health fairs (not that there is anything wrong with that) and have done only one lay lecture in 22 years of practice when one of patients literally begged me to address their womens club. The only advertising I do is for my clinic, to help the other practitioners here get known around town. I much prefer word of mouth - if someone likes what I do, they tell their family and friends - but I don't have anything against promotion as long as it is professional and reflects well on our wonderful profession. I, also, cringe when I see chiropractic presented in a carnival sideshow atmosphere.
