I will mention this to her as she has very limited access to the net right

now. The lye is packaged so well that there is really no worry. I am sure

she can ask her supplier...but I think this may be asking a lot of someone

who is doing everyone a favor.

If I am not mistaken the last bag I got had a lot of info on the bag as to

what it was and precautions that needed to be adheared to.

Tabatha,

I think when you call to place the order you can ask for the MSDS sheets and

the supplier can have them ready for you.

I don't want to discourage your co-op, because I know as well as

anyone how important it is to save money when you can. But I do want

to pass along some info.

If a chemical vendor sends you on your way without an MSDS, run.

They're either careless or clueless, and they're breaking Federal law.

50 pound bags of lye qualify as " small quantity shipments " under the

CFR Title 49, Subtitle B, Chapter I, Subchapter A, Section 173.4. This

means the driver doesn't need hazmat training and/or a hazmat

designation on his/her license, the vehicle doesn't need to be

placarded, and the accompanying paperwork requirements are eased.

However, an MSDS sheet kept in the vehicle while transporting the

sodium hydroxide is required.

Federal Hazmat laws are very strict and very difficult to sort

through. A couple of things I've picked up over the years that may

apply to your co-op... Don't open the bags until you get them home.

Once you open the bag, you've compromised the safety of the packaging

and legally you'd be required to rectify that to Federal

specifications before you can transport it on public roads again.

Also, secure the bags well. If one falls off the back of your pickup,

you're now facing a hazmat cleanup - and don't think for a minute that

you won't be held re$ponsible.

The ultimate responsibility for hazmat safety lies with the

individual. According to the Department of Transportation, " Failure to

comply with these laws risks the lives and safety of everyone who

drives, rides, flies or sails, and those involved with the transport

of hazardous materials. Violations of the Hazardous Materials

Regulations may result in civil penalties ranging from $250 to

$100,000 per violation, and criminal penalties of $250,000 to $500,000

in fines and up to ten years in prison. " They mean business.

Does anyone know the source of manufacture for this lye? I bought some

made off-shore (i.e., China) a couple of years ago and it was absolute

junk - filthy greyish-brown when diluted and full of debris. I buy

only buy domestic lye now. It might be worth a phone call to check on

where the lye is made.

I'll run along before you start throwing tomatoes at me. :)

" The chemical supplier will likely be

Ummm folks... If I'm not mistaken if you ask for the MSDS from the supplier

by federal law they HAVE to supply you with one!

Maybe I've missed something on the list, but get that MSDS from the supplier

... You can copy it for however many bags you sell to other people, but cover

your butt with the transportation of this large amount of lye and the person

buying it for their trip home. Think of the safety of fire and police crews

if you have an accident. Knowing what chemical they are dealing with could

save on lifesaving time!! They will not take just your word for what

chemical it is and God forbit you can't talk to them.

ette, the information you passed on is more than newsworthy!!! I

appreciate you passing this information on. The chemical company I buy lye from

charges me a pretty hefty hazmat fee for 50 pounds of sodium hydroxide, and my

home is little over a mile a way. Huggs, Bekka

Good lord, Bekka, will they let you pick it up yourself so you won't

have to pay that fee?

I don't think anyone is questioning whether the lye is " legit " , just

that it's transported legally and safely.

I spoke up because I know a little about the business of buying,

selling, and transporting lye. I bought over three tons - 6,000+

pounds - of it in the last 12 months and have shipped it to all corners

of the lower 48 states.

As far as my comment about my experience with offshore lye, that

was " legit " lye, too, but a lower grade than we need to make soap. Many

people aren't aware that there is such a dramatic difference in grades

of lye; now the folks here on the list do know, and can make informed

choices in the future.

I'm sure everyone is grateful for your kind gesture, and your honor is

not being questioned in the least.

LOL, I do pick it up ; ) I don't know why I have to pay this fee but

I was told by the company any one picking up any kind of hazardous

materials is suppose to pay the hazmat in NYS? I assumed this was a

mandatory fee. So I was surprised reading these posts and finding no

mention of hazmat fees on top of the cost of the lye.
