Hi of sdale :)

I'm 45 with SMA 3, and periods have always been a difficult thing for

me. I had a hysterectomy last year, so they are no longer an issue

(thank goodness!), but I thought I'd answer your question for all

those years it *was* an issue, I'm sure you'll get many good response

to this :)

Tampons were always hard for me to insert, I used them at night, but

had to have my husband insert them for me. During the day, I had to

deal with it differently, because my husband wasn't home to help.

I do not wear underwear (or pants) because I can't get them on/off on

my own, so I always go 'commando' and wear dresses or skirts. What I

would do during my period is this...I'd put 4-6 paper towels

together, then use medical paper tape to tape them flat to my

wheelchair seat. I would then get 4 more paper towels and fold them

over one more time so that they'd be thick, and I'd tape that to the

middle of the other 4-6 towels (I hope you can envision this! lol).

When I sat on this throughout the day, the paper towels on top acted

like a large feminine napkin. When those towels got messy, I'd just

change the 4 on top...just like you would a maxi pad.

It sounds kind of weird, but it worked for me for 20+ years ;)

I am on the Depo Provera shot! No periods in 4+ years

and it is SO wonderful! I hating depending on others

to take care of me when I was all bloody and gross

feeling... depo was an easy fix and one I am so happy

I did! Prior to depo I just used maxi pads and changed

them as needed.

I take a progesterone based birth control pill instead of an estrogen based

one b/c I have a history of blood clots. I have been told that I must have

my period 4x's/yr to be healthy. I was told this decreases your chance of

developing uterine cancer. I just stop the pill every 3 months for a week to

get my period. One down side is breakthru bleeding is a side effect. So every

now and then I have spotting or an unplanned light period. It beats getting

a shot imo.

Thanks for sharing your method. I don't have the kind of mobility

that you do because I have SMA 2, but it is an interesting way of

dealing with your monthly. Lucky for you you don't have to deal

with that anymore!

This is what I do, also. Depo was fine for me, but especially in the

winter it was a pain to get to the doc for a shot...They won't make an

appointment for an injection, I never knew how long I'd have to wait,

and Paratransit on top of everything makes it a 3 hour ordeal.

I had an an Endometrial Ablation and a D & C done on October 2. 2005

this same procedure a friend of mine had done last year (right before I had

mine done) she has FA/MD and another friend with SMA/MD also had done. and both

said it was the best choice for them.

asp done for my heavy periods and let me just say it was all worth it. it's

a same day procedure you go in the hospital as I did and an hour and 30 minutes

later the procedure is done...this was my choice, I didn't want any down time

with having a hysterctomy because I can and do still walk with a walker...longer

distances (mall shopping ) I use my scooter..I wasn't discharged until I voided

which I did 20 minutes after the surgery.. no scar it's not major surgery.birth

control pills and the pills you take and have your period 4 times a year wasn't

the right choice for me...I thought all of these options over and chose the

Ablation and the D & C..

when I had a lil discomfort I tool a tylenol...if I really needed to

...................now when this time of the month comes I am not weak nor wiped

out I am able to function so much better then I did before the procedures.

Since I had these proedures performed I either get it spotty ot I don't get it

at all...your ovaries aren't removed when having this procedure...

No problem. There are possible side effects to this as

well... weight gain, hair growth / hair loss,

headaches, etc... I luckily have not had any of these!

It also causes the bones to be less dense. For this I

just be sure I get lots of calcium in. I dont bare

weight so I am not as worried as some might be with

this.

Depo strips your lining so if totally effective (some

people continue to have light breakthru bleeding),

there is no blood at all, therefore you are not at a

high risk for uterine cancer by not having a period.

On the pill, when you dont have a period, the lining

is still there and is just staying put until you stop

taking the pill, that is why they recommend at least 4

periods a year while on the pill.

There are studies of breast cancer with this as well.

Low %, but with any med, there are possible side

effects that you just have to weigh. Do self exams and

always go to your annual exams and stay on top of it

just in case something does pop up.

For me this is the easiest and the safest!

I've been on Depo for 9 years. I love not having a period. Because of the

hormones, I do

think it slighty exasperates my clinical depression, and if there are any long

term side

effects of use I'm sure I'm a prime candidate for them. I get a prefilled

syringe at the

pharmacy and my hubby gives me the shot every three months at home. If they run

out of

the prefilled and give me a bottle, I always have to convince the pharmacist

that I need the

syringe for my Depo, not because I'm a intravenous drug user!

The big list is coming in tonight. I'm kind of burned out on it right

I have a somewhat embarrassing question that I hope it is ok to ask here. I've

been drinking a drink juice daily for about 12 days now. I couldn't do them the

first week without straining them but have worked up to full pulp as of today.

I've always had a problem with regularity and I drink a ton of water daily and

also eat 5 prunes daily. Will the green smoothies help me in that department?

So far, I'm still having problems " going " .

This is what my daily morning smoothie contains: healthy handfuls of kale and

spinach, 1/2 a cucumber, 1 stalk celery, a chunk of ginger, 1/2 peeled lemon and

1 apple. I add some cold water and ice cubes to help thin the consistency and

let me blend it longer for the most liquidy I can get it.

That isn't a delicate question in the least! Everything that goes in, must come

out, lol. I used to have issues as well, and found that adding a little bit of

flax seed help TREMENDOUSLY in that regard. Just add a few seeds to the

container dry, then add your other ingredients (perhaps a couple of teaspoons of

seeds-I prefer organic golden flax-chia seeds work well too) This helps form a

bulking agent which should get the sluggish plumbing off to a good start without

any discomfort.

Have you tried smoothies that contain a mixture of lots of fruits? That seems to run right through me!

That isn't a delicate question in the least! Everything that goes in, must come out, lol. I used to have issues as well, and found that adding a little bit of flax seed help TREMENDOUSLY in that regard. Just add a few seeds to the container dry, then add your other ingredients (perhaps a couple of teaspoons of seeds-I prefer organic golden flax-chia seeds work well too) This helps form a bulking agent which should get the sluggish plumbing off to a good start without any discomfort.>> I have a somewhat embarrassing question that I hope it is ok to ask here. , it may only be one of the fruits that are causing the problem. By trial

and error I discovered that I can only put a very few grapes in my smoothies

unless I want to spend the day in the bathroom. Funny because I can eat them

with no problem.

Some people's response to gut flora imbalance is to have loose stools, some is to have chronic constipation. I'm not saying that you have a gut flora imbalance, or that fruits and veggies cannot influence stools, but in some cases (especially those who tend towards chronic constipation) if you don't fix the gut flora imbalance, diet and fiber alone won't help.

Dates. Add dates and take out the banana. In fact, just eating a few dates might

help. They will sweeten your smoothie a lot, make sure to take out the pit

before blending. :)

Yogurt and kefir also set things " right " . But to get things moving definitively

add dates.

I eat dates almost daily when I want something sweet, they help stay away from my nemesis - chocolate.   I keep the banana in the smoothies because I get foot cramps if I don't.   I'm going to try the magnesium Lea Ann recommended and the flax and hopefully that will help.

Hi Kirsten,You mentioned that you've "always" had a problem with regularity. The magnesium ALWAYS works, but as I said, it is a band aide to the root problem which is an imbalance of beneficial to harmful organisms in the gut. The magnesium will also work for years as long you are taking it, but stop the magnesium and you'll go instantly back to the original problem. I've been on magnesium for years and only recently (after learning about the GAPS diet from a customer) began to learn the REASON for the chronic condition. Thanks Lea Ann, I will check it out.   Up until recently my diet had almost zero fruits and vegetables so I'm hoping that by changing the way I eat as a lifestyle change will change the regularity issues as well.  My focus is to eat more plant based foods and I've been doing this for about a month now and got the Vitamix to be able to make the green smoothies in the mornings.  I will look into the GAPS diet information as well.
