delicate question

Well, here in Canada during the 80's, I always had a way to go pee. In grade

school it had a matron's office with beds, bedpans, urinals and toilets with

male attendants who did the lifting and women attendants who did the personal

tasks (undressed, unzipped, inserted " peters " , wiped our bottoms and

redressed).

My high school also designated one classroom as the " locker room & can " . They

built an accessible bathroom and had staff manning it in the same way my

grade school did yet they also had lifts.

My college years was completely different. I had the nurses station furnish

one room with a change table set higher than normal and I had my friends lift

me (eventually that became my husbands job ... we met in college btw). The

nurse was there on days when it was just friends who were there to lift me

and she did the bedpan routine. I also did my best never to drink b4 noon

when I had a full day because I knew I wasnt gonna make it home in time.

My bladder was a great ally and I could hold my pee for 8-10hrs without

infection ... I was the envy of many women friends, disabled or not. I am not

condonning this method, but if bladder control is good then she may naturally

figure out just how long she is able to hold it.

Now a days, due to age and my household circumstances, on weekdays I wear

Tena's protective undergarments aka Pee-Pants.

For me the female urinals SUCK!!!!!!!!!

You have to go without wearing underwear or maybe wear a skirt and no

underwear and risk not dribbling on the clothes or seat cover.

I am working on a device to assist us women who are wheelchair users that

cannot lift their butts off their seats or slide too far forward to stuff a

female urinal in place. Its in the works now......wish me luck. I have no

idea how long this will take to actually get to the open market.

I wanted to say that I think it's great that you are looking for ways

to help your daughter become more independent in her personal care

I believe the 'female urinary device' your friend with SMA uses is

probably the Freshette female urinal, which you can see here:

I have one, and use it (with my husband's help) when I'm away from

home so my husband doesn't have to actually lift me onto a toilet

when I have to 'go'

I don't know if your daughter will be able to use it independently,

you do need a bit of arm strength to be able to hold the little

funnel/cup close to the body to collect the urine, but it may be

worth a try? And even if she can't use it without assistance, it

might make going to the bathroom easier on as well as her aide.

Hi ,

I have never been able to use the restroom independently. This was

instead especially difficult when I got up to 85 lbs. It will depend

how strong and mobile is when determining what works for her,

and it will likely change over the years.

Many of my friends wear a skirt without panties, and either scoot

themselves to the edge of their wheelchair seat or someone assists

them with the scooting, and they use a urinal. Hands down, this is

their favorite urinal because it folds up and is easy to hold:

I have a supra pubic catheter that was placed when I was 37 when I

ran out of options and was having serious health problems - a

surgically placed tube below my belly button. Before, I sometimes

used adult diapers.

hello, my name is . i have SMA type 2 as does my sister who is 29. i know

she uses a urinal with assistance, and has done so for many years. the

wheelchair must be able to recline so she can be in a prone position. simple,

quick process which allows her to work full-time! hope this helps!

I found the following... some might work out ok, and some not. Many of

them look as if they could be used fairly easily in a seated position.

If they alone do not provide enough " reach, " some of them prvide the

option of attaching a hose that will reach as far as needed. They are

small enough they could be stashed in a pocket, a small purse, possibly

even some sort of glasses case.

I'm not even sure this is all the info on the subject that I have

(probably not), since I have tons of unsorted info on this computer...

At any rate, a standard female urinal (pee jug) seems to be about the

most unhandy thing to have around, and sure takes up a lot of space.

Thank you everyone for the information! Am I understanding

correctly that if you are, say, 90 lbs. or more & have very limited

shoulder/arm strength (cannot scoot forward in your chair) then you

essentially always require a mechanical lift to use the potty to

pee? At a certain weight, then 99% of aides won't be able to lift

you.

Presently, we are able to carry into public restrooms, and she

has the trunk strength to sit there as long as we watch to make sure

she doesn't fall off. This has allowed us to go whereever she has

wanted so far. But, I am worried now that she is quickly becoming

heavier that we will no longer be able to go many places far away

from home or school only because of the simple matter of her being

able to pee. It's frustrating!

Hey ,

Thanks to you, I can stop my quest ... the Freshette looks ideal for me.

Now all I have to do is order one. I had a friend alter an old pair of jeans

and underwear to allow better " access " to my pee-pee-hole. If it works like I

am hoping it will, I will be able to pee anywhere I want, just like any

ambulatory man! LOL!

No, not necessiarily a mechanical lift. More likely assistance from

another person.

Let me know when you figure it out!! Right now I have

a GREAT bladder. I can go 12 hr somedays... and I

havent had a bladder infection since I was a kid. But

it would be GREAT to know that IF I had to go one day

that I could!

Hi Angie,

I hope the Freshette works well for you...it's a great little device

I saw on your earlier message that you mentioned dribbling as being a

concern...I just wanted to let you know how I dealt with that one.

I carry my Freshette in a baggie in the backpack on my chair. Along

with the Freshette, I also carry those small, individually wrapped

adhesive backed panty liners with wings. I open one of those, affix

it to the seat of my chair very close to my body, and use the

Freshette over that. Because the panty liner is thin, it doesn't get

in the way of the Freshette, and if there *is* any dribbling (usually

there is not) the panty liner catches, and absorbs it. After you are

finished, just toss the panty liner

OK, maybe I'm thinking about this wrong, but I swear I don't think I could ever

use one of

these things. I'd either miss or overflood it.

I hadn't thought about it, but it sounds like a good idea. I'll see if I

can't put something together this week.

If I had a good way to organize bookmarks, I could get this info out

quicker. My last estimate was 100,000... or maybe 200,000 or more

bookmarks. I need a flexible search engine for the things, too.

My parttime (self-employ) job mainly involves looking up stuff on the

internet.

From what I gather, you have to snug 'em in real close, and not pee too

fast. Not having the right plumbing, I cannot test it myself...

That's a neat solution. Do you use the ones with adhesive backs? I like that

idea too as the liners are thin and don't take up a lot of room to carry

them around.

Thanks Yes, I use the ones with the adhesive backs. And yes, I

also find the thinnest panty liner I can find, and make sure they are

individually wrapped, then I toss a few into the baggie with the

Freshette...as you said, they don't take up very much room at all. I

also toss in a few individually wrapped anti-bacterial wipes, and a

bottle of water to rinse out the Freshette when I'm done with it.

I have to admit, I've sometimes been afraid of the same thing with

the Freshette. If I could redesign it, I would make it just a little

bit bigger, a little bit wider. Because there have been times that I

have held it a little too long, and *really* had to go, and have been

nervous about the possibility of overflowing it, so have purposely

stopped and started my urine flow so that doesn't happen

I *try* not to wait too long now, so I don't have to worry about

overflooding it. As for missing it, I've never had that happen. It

pretty well fits your body. I've tried one other one, the Travelmate

seen here:

And found that it *was* too small, and was easy to miss. Maybe

because I'm sitting? It just wasn't easy to try to figure out where

exactly to hold that one every time Might be easier for someone

who is standing and can really see what they are doing.

I used the Freshette for a few years when I had more mobility as far

as scooting to the edge of my chair and holding the device. I was

nervous about dribbling too, but for the most part, as says,

it's designed to fit your body well and I've only ever once dribbled -

when I had held it for so long and had a difficult time with

interrupting my urine flow. It wasn't a huge deal and didn't even

spoil my chair. I never used a panty liner on the chair - though

that's a great idea! I also agree, if I could change the Freshette at

all, I'd make it wider at the opening.

I highly recommend the Freshette to anyone who has the ability to

scoot to the edge of their chair and reach between their legs.

Unfortunately, I just don't have the strength to use it on a daily

basis and it's my emergency at-home device for those times you just

hire the wrong people!

Hi Jeff,

I think it would be great, because if anyone else on this list is

You have one heck of a lot of bookmarks!! Seeing as that is your job

though, explains it I have a lot of bookmarks (so my husband

tells me!) but only because I always forget to 'clean house' so to

I use the Freshette system with assistance from a caregiver, usually

my husband or my mother when I am visiting her.

I wear pants and cut an opening in the crotch that is hidden when I'm

seated in my chair. The caregiver pulls my hips forward towards the

edge of my chair cushion. I lean back and the caregiver opens my

pants and slides my underwear to one side. The Freshette urinal is

slid underneath my pubic area and when I feel it is in proper place,

we put the tube into the toilet and I go.

Another delicate question that I have been wanting to ask others in

this group is what you do about your periods? How I wish there was a

way to get rid of them since I don't plan on having children. Besides,

I am 42 and don't want to deal with childbearing.

Here is what I do: I use large-size baby diapers and cut off the

plastic areas so I don't sit on uncomfortable stuff all day.

Generally I can wear one pad throughout the day. I have never tried

tampons since it was difficult to insert one when I was a teenager.

Very painful.
