Hi .. 14!!! I remember when he was a baby and we were teaching him to

sign! That couldn't have been 14 yrs ago,, but then, Mav was 6 and he just

turned 20 so.. I guess... ugh!

OK.. sounds like Mav in the academics are not his priorities, and, without

knowing what level he is working at.. we can't get any specific goals but.. what

about resource math and reading? How are his phonetic skills? Money skills,

telling time, calculator skills. There is a website.. GCFlearnfree.org. It

teaches these math skills.. it even has a money machine and you pretend to use a

debit card.. you can adjust it to all levels.

Before we moved back to town, the HS we were at was refusing to teach Mav

reading.. said he had hit his limit. When we moved to town.. same school

district, total different philosophy as a teacher. Mav is in band, Sp. O p.e.,

dance, resource math, resource reading and another class called II which all the

kids in HS have one afternoon/week to help them make a life plan and focus.

Now, bear in mind that Maverick has finished all his " modified " science, math,

history classes so what he is doing now is just extra but he is STILL LEARNING!

My gosh.. he is learning to balance a check book.. but he can't add! Tonight he

got out his math homework.. " I gotta finish a little bit of work.. can I use the

calculator? " I was way impressed. Maverick enjoys his times that he

interacts with the life skills class, but it's mainly for sp O pe. He does go

there once in a while for a party or something.. but he is not learning life

skills or cleaning bathrooms. (One year he did clean the lunch room because he

got a free lunch.. but it was just him and a couple of the football players, NOT

a sped thing.) This school has most of their students out in the gen

population if it works for them.

So, I guess I would say that if Mav is still struggling but LEARNING at 20..

don't take away academics from yet. Just look at what he is interested

in and make it work for him. I got a Football Math book that teaches all math

according to sports.. I'm thinking I'll use it more with Logan cause he's young

enough but ... I know he's VERY interested in sports so it might work. Right

now he is into dragons also so we do lots of counting dragons. LOL.

Hope this helps. I know it's too long .. but.. email me privately if you want

more ideas and can tell me where he is at specifically.
