Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for posting that. I really feel for you. The thought of letting our 14 year old daughter take an 8 minute ride on the train to school every day starting September is freaking me out, and she does not have Down syndrome! Our son Zacky will be 12 this year and starting middle school in September and travelling independently should not become an issue until he starts high school. However, I am always thinking to the future and wondering … Although we are not in the US, I am very interested to know whether formal courses in autonomy for young people (i.e. with a DS association or other institution) are common there and whether you feel they are truly useful and absolutely essential. This is an issue that has come up in our little association here in Italy and I am wondering if anyone on this list has any thoughts on this or experience to relate. Thanks a lot. Hi, (almost 21) just completed her travel training from the NYC Dept of Ed. She is now officially off the yellow school bus and is on her own traveling to and from her work site at Brooklyn College. I am of course terrified and today her first day, there was a sign at the bus stop that said, 'Due to Police Activity the bus is not stopping here. " But it was stopping across a 6 lane parkway, that we did not teach her how to cross. Sigh- not a biggie, I was able to drive her. Now I face the fears and challenges of letting out in the streets of Brooklyn pretty much on her own. These are all blessings and milestones to foster independence, but scary as hell!
