Guest guest
Whatever you do, do not sign permission for them to bill your insurance or medical card for the OT or Speech. They are required to do this by law and to pay for it. I had a client once whose daughter had CP and the school system used up all of the alloted hours of PT and OT during the school year leaving the child with none all summer long. Also remember that the school system is not required to provide anything for your child until he is in kindergarten. Preschool programs are programs that not all school systems have, so any rights your child has will be at the local level on this one. The first one they told me they would evaulate him until school and was out to see if he was eligible for the special needs preschool. This next meeting will cover that. Im new at this with him. What things do I need to discuss with them at this time? What servces can be done thru the school? If he gets occupational therapy thru the school, do I need to services provided from an outside source while he's not in school? Would I be able to get someone to help me teach him sign language? Guest guest
We went in for an IEP meeting and when we got there the case manager teacher has said we don't need an IEP - we are doing a services request (I forget the actual term). I had called ahead of time to let her know that we will be asking that he be served in his natural environment and they do that. They don't send the regular teachers from the schools out - they have a special one that goes to the preeschools, but it all goes through the school system. --- KAddams@... wrote: > > In a message dated 5/14/07 6:56:51 AM, > hillbillyhelper2@... writes: > > > > > > Also remember that the school system is not > required to provide anything for > > your child until he is in kindergarten. Guest guest
My son has the IEP, the Special Needs corodinator at the Sharp Learning Center said he had one in place before he turned three. Which BCW didnt do that, I was the one who went down there because I knew they were doing developmental evaluations for the special needs program2 yr olds. The lady was very suprised that my BCW coordinator wasnt the one to do it and all thias happened within a few weeks of his 3rd birthday. Needless to say we were really rushed into this process because BCW didnt have the sense to get it done ahead of time. Some of these people can be really lax when it comes to their jobs, like they got their degree out of a Cracker Jack box. www.ourchurch.com/member/b/amyangel/ Give spam the boot. Guest guest
, This is standard. They are looking for “new” problems to be added to the IEP or any new concerns you may have. I don’t know what you have in place already but you are probably in for a major change from NJ to NC. Not saying it’s going to be bad but it’s a major change. I would think very clearly before I go to the IEP and write it down to address new issues. Guest guest
So what they told you was partially true. The new school willl need to keep and provide your daughter with the services on her IEP...but only until they have time to do their own assessments and write their own IEP. Guest guest
Thanks The IEP that we had wokred up in NJ has been very good for her . What kind of concerns should I be thinking of? I know that changing schools is not easy but as she has no friends so would not the same IEP cover all the problems that could occur in NC? She is going from middle school to high school . In either state, she would have gone to a different building. I have not had any problems with her IEP in NJ.They were very helpful and wanted her to be successful in school so they gave her exactly what she needed. As this is her first IEP meeting in NC, should I bring an advocate or should I wait and see how the meeting goes? I always thought that bringing an advocate was putting the school on the defensive. From the time Allyson first entered public school,in third grade, she had a great IEP.I have never had to have a advocate as NJ was on the same side as I was in getting Allyson a good school experience. Guest guest
The one thing I would do is tape the IEP meeting, that way if you need to involve an advocate later they could hear what happened so far. You will need to notify the school in advance that you will be recording because that means they will record too. You haven’t really said what kinds of things in the IEP your concerned about. Is her IEP more academic or behavior based? Example if she is stressed did her IEP tell her somewhere or something she could do to calm herself – can that apply to the new school = my DS has a red laminated card he can carry and if he is stressed before he blows up he is allowed to put it on his desk and leave to go to a “quiet room” or the VP’s office and he does not need to ask permission just put the card on his desk and go. This would not work in a school that did not have a quiet room or a understanding VP. We had to have an advocate last year and the one thing she told us for future is never sign anything except the attendance sheet - take the rest home and think about what ever the changes are before you decide to sign or not and also that will give you time to consult a advocate if necessary as well. Also if in the IEP they are focusing on anything other than your child bring the conversation back to you’re here to discuss FAPE for your child (Free and appropriate education) Hth Greta

Guest guest
An advocate isn’t necessary at this point. I know that IEP’s follows the student, just make sure you have everything in hand when you go. The IEP in Alabama, if you were to change schools the IEP is still good from one school to another. I don’t know about state to state. I would check into this maybe look it up in s Law. I was simply stating this was standard to want to know your “current” concerns. I might would add to the IEP with something like; because she is new to school and state she could benefit with a “buddy system” or use your own judgment. It will be entirely different cultural wise from NJ to NC is all I was saying. Any “new” problems she may have had during the summer address these at the IEP. I can’t speak for different states but in Alabama it’s lacking in all areas for our autties. Good Luck! Guest guest
Transitioning would defitnitly be a good IEP goal.Going from middle school to a high school is trying with a lot of students .There may be more kids being mean there because she is just entering the high school ( you know the freshman class vs the higher classes) .Basically when you go in they should keep with your IEP you have in place right now but when you move ansd start the new school there may be different circumstances that may need to be addressed (now this is a lil ex: some kids get a fixation on certain foods and certain brands but they arnt available in all states.my friend moved from pa to south carolina and she cant believe they dont know what chipped ham is and she cant get it that way .)so just things like that .plus remember at anytime during the yr if you feel there needs to be a change in the IEP then you have the right to call a meeting. My friend who moved to South Carolina said it is a big difference in just the way people do things I guess they are more laid back and not as fast paced as us up here. She also stated that when they answer things in class they have to go yes maam yes sir .least where she is .(which there is nothing wrong with that, wished there were some more mannered kids than there are up here lol. Just some difference to be prepared for may throw her for a loop and get her upset. vickie IEP meeting> > > > We have moved from NJ to NC. My daughter is 15 years old and going into > 9th grade. Guest guest
Good luck with the IEP meetings both of you. ESY is great for our kids, it helps them greatly. It's a shame that NY state has decided that if your child is not severely affected they no longer need the special ed summer school. That is the battle I am having to fight now. > > Ya. Guest guest
My son always went to his home school. They have to show why inclusion in his normal classroom will NOT work BEFORE they can move him out. When my son reached Jr. High they told me he would be in the self contained classroom because that was how THEY did stuff their. Needless to say he did NOT go into that classroom he was included with an aide into the regular classrooms. He was pulled for speech and was in the remedial regular ed Math room. Remember your son is on an " INDIVIDUAL " education plan. Not a " This is how we do it " plan. You have rights. My son was the second to be included in Jr. High and High School you just have to know your rights to push for what you want. GL
