Guest guest
Hi all. I'm mom to a 4 year old girl with DS who has had some behaviors that I'm starting to get concerned with. Not sure if it's anything I should be worried about or not. She flaps her hands (sometimes very vigorously) when she's excited or overstimulated. She also fidgets....a lot......and has to twirl a sock or something in her hand while she watches television or rides in the car. We also have humming and other vocal sounds (more at times when she's tired or bored), as well as tooth grinding, and mouthing objects when she's upset, tired or has excess energy. I was worried about a dual diagnosis of DS and autism, but she's very social and affectionate, so I'm not sure that's the answer. She's done a lot of these things since she was small, but I thought by now she'd be growing out of some of them. Have any of you experienced these things? Should I be concerned and have her evaluated? And did you try to stop these behaviors? (If so, what methods did you use?) Thanks so much for your help.
