Guest guest
Welcome Robin, Chelsea and Seth, I am . Mom to 9, caregiver to 1. We are caregivers to who is 50. Really, he is just one of our kids, but legally.... We also have Maverick 21, and Logan, 10. Both of them have down syndrome and both of them were adopted. We adopted Maverick from birth and we adopted Logan when he was 6. Maverick (middle name Seth!) has always been a part of a loving family and is one of the most social (to a fault, yes) guys ever. He excels in sports and drums. (He is not so strong on work ethics because why work when you can socialize.. work in progress.) He had open heart surgery at 4 months with a 5 % chance of living and let me tell you he LIVES! No major problems health. Logan was in a very neglectful situation for the first 6 years. He is amazingly bonded to our family, considering. He has some health and behavioral issues, some of which should have been taken care of at birth and are worse now because they weren't. Behavior... tests in the " highly probable " category of Autism.. sure has the behaviors.. and also has been label " Traumatic Behavior Disorder " due to his first 6 years of life. He went from not walking and talking at age 6 to running, jumping, swimming and talking up a storm.. he loves being with his 9 and 10 yr old sibs and they push him to further limits all the time. He is currently fully included going into 4th grade with is brother, Chip. Cognitively he is awesome. He has a desire to learn that Maverick didn't have and will be passing Mav up quickly. was raised in an institution until he was 22 and then he came to live in our group home. We left there and moved across the country and he just came to visit us for 2 weeks every Christmas. He was happily settled with his friends and in his workshop. However, when the home closed down and we were asked if he could come to live with us we were overjoyed. He has made a wonderful adjustment from living with adults to living in a family. He is happily employed at a sheltered workshop, enjoys Special Olympic Activities, and ushering at church. He tolerates and embraces his " sibs " . His a major Nascar Fan and will watch it ad naseam. You will find a wonderful variety of people with a wonderful variety of stories and opinions and experiences on this list. Do NOT be afraid to ask ANY question. You will get 10 answers and it will be up to you to sift through them and get your own opinion, but that is what is wonderful about this list.. different opinions abound and we all learn from each other as well as support each other through the Ups and Downs of parenting our kids with down syndrome and other sp. needs.
