Well, Becky, I will help you rant. There are only 80-100 thousand people on

the wait list for services for TN and maybe more. I never wanted services for

Bernadette because I was going to live for ever and I have always heard horror

stories that I was not going to expose Bernadette to. We would have had to put

Bernadette on the list when she was born..32 years ago and even still may not

make it to the top. We have just come upon a situation that is very irritating.

Bernadette who has her own home has met a young lady that would make a great

house mate and they want to live together, but because Bernadette is not

connected with the State and the friend is they cannot live together. The

friend would lose all her services. That is just another reason I am against

the State having control. Obviously, it doesn't matter what the person

wants.....it is what the State says. What if there were only martians from

where ever on the State list and you had nothing in common or just plain didn't

like them? ALL people should be able to live with whoever they want and not

just put two or more people together and say you have to live together. Unless

something changes I guess Bernadette is still on the search for a housemate.

Bernadette is very content living alone, but she has found this friend and they

want to live together. I think Bernadette would enjoy having someone around

that she could do things with and talk and giggle with. Hopefully, one day life

will be better for people with disabilities.

Re: respite/hab

What is DDD? I have never heard of that. We also don't get any respite

where we live. We get practically no services in TN. My son is almost 22

and still gets voc rehab through the high school. Don't know what he will

get next year. When we were in IA we did receive plenty of resources. He

got a certain number of hours of respite services per month. It was quite

adequate. Now we would have to pay a pretty penny to get someone to stay

with ds that he doesn't know. Ok, I'll stop the rant.

Blessings,

I had no idea!! :( I thought all of the US had the same programs. DDD is

the Department of Developmental Disabilities here in AZ. They provide OT,

PT, ST, and some other services including respite/habilitation. People have

to qualify by their disability level, but not by income. I fell so naive.

I'm sorry.

I am in Oregon and we used to get $500.00 annually per family from our county DD

services however, with the last round of budget cuts that went out the window.

We have no respite or help with any services unless our private insurance

companies cover it.  Arizona is pretty unique in the level of services families

have been receiving....be thankful and hope it continues!

Services have been cut drastically in Texas as well; if you're sick,

disabled, and/or elderly, tough. Texas no longer cares.
