Guest guest
Hi everyone, My three year old son with DS has developed almost an obsession with taking his diaper off. He can get off his pants and his diaper with no assistance when he wants to. He has really been fighting me with diaper changes for a few months now but this desire to be completely naked from the waist down has just developed in the last few weeks. First, let me say he is not ready to potty train. I have been casually trying for the past 6 months at least, but he has no awareness of when he needs to go or even after he has done it. When he takes his diaper off, he will pee on the floor or wherever he is sitting and doesn't seem to notice. I have tried putting training pants underwear on him to see if that would make him more aware that he is wet, but he soaks right through them and his clothes and goes about his business. So, I really don't think he is ready for potty training. I plan to try cloth diapers to see if they bother him less, but wondered if any of you have experienced anything like this or have any other ideas for me. Last night I put him to bed and he woke up at 10pm crying. When we went in his room to see what was wrong, he was completely naked in his bed and had peed all over it. So he took off his pajamas and his diaper after I put him to bed and then fell asleep that way. I have already taken him to the doctor and had his urine checked for a UTI (less than a week ago), so it's not that. I am completely overwhelmed and frustrated and need some help. Have any of you experienced anything like this? Can anyone think of any other possible solutions? Thanks in advance, Kristi Mom to , 7 and , 3 (DS, Celiac and more) Also - I'm terribly sorry about the spam sent from my email address a few days ago - it was hacked! Guest guest
We did not have this as a chronic problem, just once or twice to paint with poop :-( but I recall people putting kids in those sleeper pajamas, with the long zipper and footies, backwards so the kiddos were unable to reach the zipper. I suspect you'd have to cut the feet off, unless it was big enough to twist them around right. I have also heard for daytime, overalls, maybe those were backwards too..... some form of clothing that will prevent him from getting to the diaper. He probably won't be the fashion statement of the year, but you won't be cleaning poop and pee off everything :-) Really, someone needs to make a diaper cover with soft suspenders that would be hard to take off.... do you sew? I agree, if they are not ready to potty train, it's not worth the frustration for everyone. Best of luck, these kinds of things are very trying for Moms, but it will get better! , mom to (16), (14 DS), Sammy (12) and auntie to (18) **can you say way too much teen attitude at my house these days! Guest guest
Hi, We went through this with several of our babies. At night we would put them in the sleepers on backwards. If they were big enough we didn't have to cut the feet, just twisted them. (The feet of the pajamas, not of the child!) Also, during the day we put on onsies that snapped in the crotch. I even had to have a friend make some when one of the kids was too big. We took T-shirts a couple sizes too big and then cut an upside down U on the bottom and put snaps on. It was a cute look and really neat because I could dress all my boys in the same T but one had the body suit style. Good luck, it's NOT fun! Guest guest
That is what we did, too.  We did cut off the feet or found one piece jams with no feet. Then we put them on backwards.  The zipper ones are great.  We also did onesies forever for this problem, plus it helped with his G-tube.  He was so little that we did OK for a long time and yes, he was 3, 4, and even 5 when we were still doing this!  We are still working on potty training at age 10.  > > >It has been difficult, to say the least, and we ARE being consistent, working a program, etc.  Sometimes I think that a few Spec Ed people think that we are NOT doing what we should or he would be trained by now but honestly, until someone comes in here and watches what we do and can give me some other advice that we haven't already tried... well.... I just can't worry about what others think.  Alden still needs to be told to go to the bathroom on a fairly regular schedule.  He initiates peeing in the toilet some of the time but will wet his pants if we are not diligent.  He still avoids pooping on the toilet.  We have managed to get him on the toilet to poop a few times and we make a huge big deal about it and he has initiated a few times lately but usually has a little bit of BM in his underwear first and then gets the rest in the toilet.  This is just now beginning to occur so there is a tiny bit of change, a little bit of " light " showing progress.  Agonizing!  (There have been times when duct tape seemed to be the only answer but I did refrain from going to that extent.  LOL) > > >Another thing that we did as he grew and onesies were not working as well and he was " mostly " over it but not " quite " ... we were NEVER sure and were ALWAYS on the " smell out " (lookout with our noses) in the early AM ...was to put him in long underwear or long jams. Shorts were an invitation for hands to go in if we were not quick enough.  Again, this was when he was older and the episodes of " play " were less frequent.  Now, we are able to put him in anything as long as he sleeps in a night time pull up BUT we are still listening for early morning BM's because he will sometimes go to the bathroom and try to clean himself up by himself (which is fine and dandy as long as we are aware of it because there is ALWAYS more to clean up, more teaching to do, etc. and if we DO sleep through it... well... it can be less than fun what with a few spots here and there and then the carpet cleaner has to be brought out. > > >He is doing better.  It is S L O W going, though.  I am putting in a referral soon for one of the developmental pediatricians at the Army Hospital here at Bragg to discuss potty training, what we are doing, and see if I can't get some more support and records for his IEP. > > >Kiersten > > >From: and FRANK <michdock@...> >KristiD <kristiduda@...> >Cc: >Sent: Thursday, January 19, 2012 2:09 PM >Subject: Re: Diaper Trouble - Help! > > > >Hi, >We went through this with several of our babies.
