Guest guest
This is completely legal and legit. is on a waiver and with the waiver I get to pay myself to take care of him (plus he has very complex needs as well) and he does get SSI which does help out. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry Feeling the need to speak up. OK, I have been hearing many stories lately from a relative. Her BF has a brother 27yo with DS. He lives at home with his mother, brother and some other siblings and their significant others. Almost no one in the house has a job. I was told by this relative - " oh, the state pays his mom to take care of him - that's her job. " I have never heard of anyone being paid to take are of their child with special needs. I can only guess that this family lives off the meager SS payment give to the 27yo with DS. No one else in the house is on disability. Am I just being paranoid, should I just mind my own business? is there anything I can do to alert authorities - it might just make the situation worse. Is this illegal, or only WRONG! Thanks for listening. Barb ------------------------------------ Click reply to all for messages to go to the list. Just hit reply for messages to go to the sender of the message. Guest guest
Thanks , I have to admit that I was about to lose faith in people. I guess that because Sam is so young, I do not look into benefits and program for adults. Guest guest
Don't know 'this' situation, but parents can be paid ....on the waiver program. Before the child turns 18, the state considers the parent's responsible and therefore cannot be paid. After a child turns 18 y.o., the parents can be paid to do services/training for their child. Guest guest
Sure....I'm sure there are also many programs that I'm not aware of. I only know about the waiver program in OK.....and not all about that. Best wishes to you all. Shirley Feeling the need to speak up. > > OK, I have been hearing many stories lately from a relative. Guest guest
Once the child turns 18 things change then income is based on the child's income not the household income. Trust me for a family of 5 there is absolutely no way that we would be able to live off of what I get paid (and I get paid for 32 hours) and what gets in SSI. For disabled children under 18 they can get SSI if the household income is low (and it doesn't matter what the relationship is between child and the others that live in the household). Guest guest
I live in WV and I could get paid to work with (following a treatment program). I do not want paid to watch , I want to work and have cared for in his home until we get home. Here in WV, the reimbursement rate to families is pretty low - the reimbursement rate for paid staff is also low (8.00 per hour). The paperwork is awful and IMHO, this state needs a major overhaul. I also want to be 's mother and not his staff. And yes, I can do my own training program, without it being " written up " and approved by a team of folks who really do not know my son. I call it regular parenting. One good thing about paid staff is that they go through the background checks and a weeks worth of training. We just had a woman leave that we interviewed, as workers come and go frequently. We had the GMA come, she went through training (at age 76) and they refused to hire her because she didn't graduate from high school. Here is what we have dealt with: Worker #1 Drama queen with no idea of what boundaries are. Brought her boyfriend over and later informed us he was waiting trial for a rape..which he didn't do (yea, not buying that one!) Worker #2 Grandmother- had background checks cleared and agency said we could pay out of pocket pending training. She didn't show up on first day of training and agency didn't know why. When we asked her, she was surprised that the agency didn't know she failed the drug test (+ marijuana). Worker #3 Really good worker, only stayed to fund her missionary travel expenses. Worker #4 Very obese girl who broke my couch and 's bed (she stood on it to hang a picture of Sponge Bob that SHE colored on his wall above his bed). Had a few baby daddys, DV incidents, boyfriend parked in driveway while she was inside, drama, drama, drama - talked on the cell phone all the time and used my computer to handle her ebay sales. Mentioned therapy, meds and anger issues. GMA was here and said for three hours, she never checked on , who was in the MattCave. She also overbilled and committed fraud. She got called in (to get fired) and said she quit. Worker #5, really Worker #3 - returned early from Mexico because her grandmother was dying. Really I think it is because she missed her boyfriend. She stayed until she got married. Worker #6 Another girl with baby daddy and boyfriend (s). Claimed she got stuck in traffic twice and was an hour late - had to scramble to find someone to get off the bus. Boyfriend kicked her out when she got caught cheating and he took her baby. Think that happened on the day she was late. Hope CPS has her child, if not, they will one day if she continues her behaviors. Also involved in DV - she was let go after 2 weeks! Worker #7 Older Panamanian woman with lots of experience. I had actually heard many good things about her from coworkers years before. She wasn't rattled when purposefully locked her out of the house and she stayed one step ahead of him. Wonderful person - but after 2 weeks, she found a job with health insurance. I can't blame her for leaving. Now who will be Worker #8????
Guest guest
Wow . We have been soooo lucky with 's workers that they sorta become part of the family. Guest guest
, How much does NY pay 's workers? We live in the Eastern Panhandle where many work in DC, MD and VA. I can't speak for MD or DC, but in VA, 's respite workers got paid 12.00 hour. A friend of mine has a daughter who gets paid 23.00 an hour in land. Anyway, in NOVA (northern VA), income and cost of living is very high. The county I work in is the wealthiest in the nation. That area's workers should get a higher rate then workers in other areas of the state. made more than 12.00 an hour when she worked at a Subway in VA in the late 1990's. So WV folks work outside the state where pay is higher (yours truely included). There is no incentive - minimum wage or slightly above just doesn't cut it. Same goes for teachers - the good ones work in VA or MD. Re: Feeling the need to speak up. I live in WV and I could get paid to work with (following a treatment program).
