Guest guest
Sharon I will pray for you to be able to finish your swimming for your health's sake. Swimming is a great exercise and really burns the calories. I use to swim laps every morning; I wish I hadn't quit. Is there something Dan could do that he enjoys while you finish your swimming? like read, watch a movie on a little DVD, or listen to music? Let us know how it goes. Love and blessings, Pat K Wish Me Luck Today starts the official weeks of summer for Dan and I, although next week he goes to Boy Scout Summer Camp but once again I digress. We are starting back at swimming 3 times a week, but my class goes longer than his so he has to go back to what's called the Discovery Center - he hates it there. He is not a physical guy and does not want to participate so I have told them many many times that he is only here because he has to be while I am not with him and that he would rather watch or pace and to allow him to do that. Last year I came to get him and he was crying all the time so I stopped exercising. Well I can't now I've gotta lose pounds and I mean a lot of them. So he has to be good and go there. I will explain once again to the staff but he has to help too. If he gets beligerent like he does with me they will call me out of the pool which will piss me off. We have talked and talked and talked about this and the fact that he has to go to the Discovery Center but he is still mad at it and currently is yelling at my husband that he does not want to go. We have planned his swimming lessons around mine so he won't be in there very long but he is still pissed. Wish me luck that he stays calm and that I get a good workout. Guest guest
he is allowed to read in the Discovery Center so I packed a book for him. His problem is that they want him to join in the games and fun and they are all sports related - he hates most sports and they keep nagging him so he gets mad. We go through this every summer and I usually end up giving in and stop going cause it is so horrible for him. But this year I can't my BMI is way too high they are talking Bariatric Surgery which I am not thrilled about so I gotta exercise. I do light aerobics in a heated therapy pool which is good for my hips and knees which are full of arthritis. He can't bring any electronics cause they could get stolen and I rather have him read or pace or walk the perimeter of the gym. They the workers just need to leave him alone and everything will go smoothly. Thanks for the prayers based on previous experience we are going to need it. Guest guest
Hi, Since he is probably on sensory overload and hates the Discovery Center but has to be there try this. Get a note from a doctor or an ot or someone in authority who can say: This child needs to be left alone to read, pace or whatever you want him to do. Have the note posted on a bulletin board in the room and in his record at the center. Then take a bag of his favorite things to do. Label them with his name, plainly, let the sitters know they are responsible for just leaving him alone and not letting his stuff get stolen. Explain to him that he has to be there but you will make it as comfortable as possible for him. Do you have some adult or older kid who could come with him as his one-on-one? They could just shadow him and relieve the staff there of any responsibilities for direct supervision? Looking at this from his point of view, this is probably torture for him. That doesn't mean that you stop what you are doing, it's important for you to take care of yourself too, but you make it as comfortable as you can for him. Have you thought of writing a social story about the experience? In you social story you can explain what happens, when, and why. The give him a visual representation of how long you will be there and when you will pick him up. If he can't tell time then show him a pix of a clock with the hands on the appropriate numbers. That might help relieve his anxiety. That will also serve you too. Since summer is here I hope there is someone who you can find to go with him for a couple of hours. Many high school students and college students are looking for volunteer positions to put on their resumes for school to help qualify for scholarships so that's where to start. If you attend a church, go to the young people dept. and ask for help there. It doesn't have to be the same person every day, maybe two or three would be willing to help once or twice a week. When it's all said and done, the happier he is the happier you will be. Unfortunately he can't help the way he feels. That's what spectrum is all about.Hope this helps. This is a battle, not won in a day. We need to take care of ourselves but we can't undo all the good things we put in our kids over one issue every day. I know it's hard, but it's time to be creative. Guest guest
I don't see why they don't just let Dan read or walk if that is what he enjoys doing. maybe they will this year. How about card games or board games? Could he get them to play something that he likes sometimes? Would some kind of reward entice him to maybe play one sport activity? Anyway, I'm just brain storming; you have probably already tried everything. Guest guest
We got through another day. Karac was good, but he is doing a lot of annoying humming. This is a challenging week with Ayden and Karac, however, Karac is really sweet about Ayden. Ayden amuses him. I hope had a good day. Love and blessings,Pat K Wish Me Luck Today starts the official weeks of summer for Dan and I, although next week he goes to Boy Scout Summer Camp but once again I digress. Guest guest
stacie It went well until he was done showering and his escort did not meet him at the pool so he took himself up - I got of the pool in a panic, almost ran upstairs dripping wet in my bathing suit and a towel but they the discovery center came down and told us he came up and was safe. I have now retold him that he has to wait for them to come get him That was a scary one for a while. I use to swim laps every morning; I wish I hadn't quit. Is there something Dan could do that he enjoyswhile you finish your swimming? like read, watch a movie on a little DVD, or listen to music? Let us know how it goes.
