Guest guest
well today i shipped to boxes ups, i usually go usps, but i was in a rush, so i found the ups, anyhow, for a 3 pound box they charged me 8.15, and my usps charges 5.15 what a rip off!!!!! and then i had to pay $16.80 for a 7 pound box. ridiculous, i wanted to turn and go to the post office, but the guy was so nice, i hate being mean like that, so i jsut shut my trap and left, next time i will NOT go there!! and both boxes were coming from cali, both to texas!!! Shipping and Handling How do you calculate those shipping and handling charts (you know the ones everyone uses on web pages and in mail order catalogs) when you don't know where everyone will be ordering from??? Everything I have seen so far requires a zip code????? Marcelle __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi, It could depend on how you ship. Do you use the Post Office? Or do you ship UPS and/or Fedex? You can also charge by the weight, or charge by the amount of order. Is this for retail orders or wholesale? Everything comes into play. I personally went to different websites, looked at what they did and adapted it to my needs. I started out with the Post Office and added $1.00 to their basic shipping. I started at $4.00 and then increased to $4.50 because I was paying for delivery confirmation on every order. After a certain order amount (above $25) I increased it to $6.45. Because after $25, the customer had generally ordered more items, causing the weight of the order to be heavier...after a certain poundage, the P.O. increased their price and so did I. Now I ship UPS and/or Fedex...prices are relatively the same for 2 lbs. to the East or West Coast. Above that, it can increase. I live ont he East Coast, so to the West Coast can cost more ground than to Florida. Khadiyja Y. Guest guest
When I ship, I first go to both the http://www.usps.com and http://www.ups.com web sites. They have caluculators to figure out what your package will cost. I put the postage on at home and just whiz through when I go to either one. If the package is relatively small, my postman will take it. jan m
Guest guest
My shopping cart didn't give me options to check the zip code - so I made educated guesses. I just took the prices for Zone 5 from where I live, figuring that it would average out in the long run. I am going to rethink my shipping policy, though. It may be better to just have a flat price per number of items and have free shipping over a certain amount of purchase. It's easier to calculate, a good deal to the customer and I can probably handle it. Does anyone else have ideas on how to handle shipping? Guest guest
General rule of thumb is that anything under 10 lbs is cheaper to go by usps (and faster, too). Even my UPS guy tells me to go to the post office for little packages. AND, you can get free boxes, tape and labels from the USPS. Order on-line - very easy. Guest guest
Sounds like you sent the packages from a ups drop station and they add $3 per package to process the shipment...per box. That's the drop station's overhead...if you had dropped the packages at a real ups counter, not an authorized generic drop station, the charges would have been lower. The owner of our local generic drop station said he would lower the per package fee to $1 if I promised him a certain number of packages a week...I opened a shiping account of my own. Saved the dollar and time to get the packages to his place across town. I didn't have to pass the cost on to customers either. Guest guest
A few hours a week I help a friend pack and ship antiques and collectibles she sells on e-bay. We have found that in order to not be " ripped off " in shipping, we ship anything 4 lbs and under usps, and anything above 4 lbs ups.   Bright blessings.
Guest guest
Which leads me to a question, is there place to go online to get " generic " shipping costs for sending packages USPS or does one have such information based upon retail value possibly? I'm located in Virginia. Thanks, Press

Guest guest
Hi y'all, I don't reckon there is a right or wrong way to charge for shipping - it's a personal thing and if your customers are happy, then it works. But for the below order, using the US Postal Priority Mail system would still be rather costly .. the US Post Office is trying to put themselves out of the package shipping business. As for pick-up charges for UPS, DHL and the like .. not only can they be waived, but agreements for some discount can be arranged if you use them often. Also .. you'll find a bit of confusion in trying to pre-determine costs for Express Services (UPS/DHL/FedEx) as they might be more for a location closer to you than for one farther away .. and I think that has to do with their internal operations and ease of delivery to this place vs that one. > well today i shipped to boxes ups, i usually go usps, but i was in a rush, so i found the ups, anyhow, for a 3 pound box they charged me 8.15, and my usps charges 5.15 what a rip off!!!!! and then i had to pay $16.80 for a 7 pound box. ridiculous, i wanted to turn and go to the post office, but the guy was so nice, i hate being mean like that, so i jsut shut my trap and left, next time i will NOT go there!! and both boxes were coming from cali, both to texas!! MeLiSsA's Princez Candles As of 1 January 2001, US Postal Priority Mail rates were raised to the following - the figures in the right hand column are " Weight in Lbs .. not Over, " and the Zones are determined with a chart using the first three digits of the Zip Code: Zones Wt: 1/2/3 4 5 6 7 8 1 $3.50 .................. Same .................. 2 $3.85 .................. Same .................. 3 $5.15 .................. Same .................. 4 $6.35 .................. Same .................. 5 $7.55 .................. Same .................. 6 $7.90 $ 8.10 $ 8.15 $ 8.25 $ 9.50 $10.35 7 $8.25 $ 8.55 $ 8.75 $ 8.95 $10.45 $11.65 8 $8.50 $ 9.20 $ 9.35 $ 9.65 $11.40 $12.95 9 $8.65 $ 8.75 $ 9.95 $10.35 $12.34 $14.25 10 $8.75 $10.30 $10.55 $11.05 $13.30 $15.55 After some experiments with various ways of charging for shipping, we decided to go with Actual Charges .. that made customers smile when they received a package with the postage amount indicated being the amount we charged. And we're lucky in that the company in land is around 100 yards from the Post Office so we can run over and check weight easily. But for heavier packages .. multiple packages, and almost all orders to buyers outside the USA, we often find DHL to be less than US Postal Priority Mail. As for charging based on value of the shipment, a problem there is that an ounce of Rose Otto will cost the buyer more than many pounds of other EOs and you can bet the buyer isn't gonna smile if you charge a bunch for sending them a package containing one ounce of product ... :-( Just my thinking .. folks gotta do what gives'em warm fuzzies. Guest guest
I don't ship too often so I take the order, then call or email back with the total amount. I'm often at my computer when I take the order so can pull up the rates right away. jan m
