Carrots = orange food coloring for Orange Sorbet

I posted this earlier, but changed the subject line for this one.Carrots = excellent orange color.Beets = excellent red color. It only takes a SMALL amount of beet to equal red food coloring. I dice beets into tiny squares and set them out to air dry then use them in shows to brighten up the color of my fruit juice. At home I dehydrate those squares and save for when a smoothie needs a touch of red :-)

Half cup water, 1 whole orange and ice cubes (because I like my juice cold). Then the solution hit me...... I started throwing in a tablespoon of orange juice concentrate and BINGO! I had fresh juice, the benefit of the whole fruit and a stronger fruit taste. Plus it made the drink a little more 'orange' colored, which made it nicer to look at. Maybe something similar would help you too. Orange Sorbet I made the orange sorbet recipe that was in the book that came with the machine. 2 oranges peeled & cut in half 2 T sugar 4 cups ice cubes It didn’t have much flavor at all. I’m wondering if 4 cups of ice was too much. Has anybody else had this problem. AmicoCT zone6

This brings up an excellent point as well as being a good suggestion. I think we often forget that how our food looks and smells is almost as important as how it tastes. ly, it's one of the reasons that I only use my vitamix for frozen lemonades.

When I first got it, I tried the fruit smoothies with the hidden vegatables. I used a strawberry, blueberry, banana with spinach. And while I didn't care for the banana, I openly acknowledge that I was pleasantly surprised to find that I couldn't taste the spinach AT ALL. I thought that I'd quickly join the ranks of those posting here that was in love with smoothies and hidden veggies. And then it happened......

As I sat and enjoyed my smoothie, marveling at the tastes and health factors, it slowly turned from a pretty and appetizing pink to sort of a greyish, greenish yuk! I know what happened. It was the chlorophyll in the spinich, and I tried to tell myself that my taste buds didn't care what color it was. So I tried several times, but I honestly couldn't get past the mental idea of how it looked. And as a result, my expensive and honestly wonderful vitamix sat for months unused until I started making frozen lemonades.

I really don't know if I'm the only one with this problem, but I can't deal with how smoothies made with green veggies turn into a yuky color. And part of the reason that I invested into a vitamix in the first place was to get more greens into my diet.

I am one who is able to overlook the color, but if you aren't what would you think of chocolate brown? Red strawberries and greens = a dark olive green. If you thought of it as chocolate colored, would that change your perception? If you needed it to taste chocolaty then how about going ahead and tossing in a tablespoon of cocoa powder?OR what if you got an insulated cup with a lid where you can't see the smoothie?OR what about bright green smoothies - do you mind that color (My Emerald Ecstasy is bright green.OR what about using yellow squash and/or peeled zucchini (which do not add color)?Just some ideas.A strawberry Green smoothie is a really ugly color, but the taste is unmistakably strawberry! :-)

Smell is more important than color to me. I'm over the green color. It only took a couple of really good tasting smoothies (after I figured out I don't like romaine in them and would rather use kale or spinach). I could never get past the smell of the smoothie with romaine in it. That is one reason I hate Daiya cheeses (vegan cheese). They smell absolutely positively wretched to me. ack! My smoothies made with blueberry were a purple color. The rest have definitely been green, but I can handle that as long as they don't smell like grass or hay. :) Lorihttp://lifeontheveganedge.blogspot.com/From: Lea Ann Savage <lsavage@...> Sent: Saturday, October 1, 2011 5:44 PMSubject: Re: Carrots = orange food coloring for Orange Sorbet

This is why I personally use blueberries and/or grape juice in all of my smoothies :-)
