Guest guest
Hi all, My name is Lori and my daughter is 13, we live in Texas. I have been a lurker here since was born, however we had an emergency this weekend that I now need your support and advice. Last Tuesday started complaining of a stomach ache, the next day she started vomiting but no fever. By Thursday I was starting to get a little concerned so we took her to our family doctor who said it was a stomach virus, gave her a shot and sent us home. That night she was so sick we took her to the ER. The doctors there did blood work and came in and told us that has type 1 diabetes! Her blood sugar level was 1100, and they did not have the facilities to take care of her so she had to be airlifted to a ped-icu in Lubbock. We had to put our baby on a helicopter by herself and watch them fly off, while we made the 2 1/2 hour trip by car. (There was no room for either of us to go with her) Over the weekend we had a crash course in " diabetes 101 " , learned to give insulin injections and how to count carbs. This is so over whelming, my head is still spinning. We did get to come home today. But now that we are home I'm panicked, how do we make all this easier for her to understand? I hope there is someone who has successfully handled all of this, and can help put me at ease. Thanks so much! Lori
