Guest guest
Ok.. today was the day. Logan's IEP at 3:30. and I and 8 kids/ sp needs adults. We had stuff to keep the kids busy.. but.. still my attention was scattered. Anyway.. the sped teacher showed a cute little slideshow.. and then... the speech therapist started with HER goals. She read the first goal.. which we WERE going to have her rewrite because it was not comprehensible nor measureable, but we never got to that point. After she read the goal, I turned to the gen ed teacher and asked her if she understood the goal and how she was going to implement that goal in the classroom. She stated that the aide would do it. I said again, but how do YOU work with his IEP goals in the classroom. She then stated that she does NOT work with the sped kids.. SHE works with the Gen Ed kids. The AIDE works with the sped kids. She gives the lesson plan to the sped teacher on Fridays and she writes up lessons for the aide to teach him the next week. The sped teacher IS in the classroom working with Logan and another child for an hour/day. The rest of the time the aide is responsible. We said that we knew they had wonderful staff and the sped teacher was very good at modifying the work, and that we were SURE the aides were very qualified AIDES, but we didn't feel it was appropriate for our son to be taught by an aide and not a teacher. The principal stated that he had 2 certified teachers working with him. We pointed out that the gen ed teacher had stated that she DIDN'T work with him and that the sped teacher was only with him for an hour... and we felt that the GEN ED teacher needed to be the one responsible and take ownership or it wasn't inclusion. WOW!!! The principal said.. " If that is the way this meeting is going to go, I am going to table the meeting. " I said. OK.. and she said.. " This meeting is tabled. I need everyone to leave the room immediately! " BOY did they scatter. Well, not US. We had to gather up 8 kids/adults and their books, cars, snacks, etc so it took us about 15 min to actually get from the classroom to our car. And we did NOT rush it! LOL. I wish I was a mouse in the corner of that principal's office where I am sure they were all hiding and watching us leave. OH what fun!!! Tomorrow will call the dir of sped and see where we get. Next time we sit down it will be with more legal support. On the way home, I was telling how it was in Chip's class for a little boy who has DS. The gen ed teacher calls on him and he works with the other children most of the time. The aide is with him, but she is a support. She does take him to another room to read sometimes during quiet reading time.. but overall what I see is the teacher taking responsibility and getting support from the sped teacher and aide. Chip was sitting between us in the car(he and Logan are both in 2nd grade but at different schools.) Chip said.. " There is an empty chair at table 5 and he would be sitting with a different group than XXX if he was in my class! " Oh.. I love my children.. 7 yrs old and he GETS inclusion!! Should I sign him up to give a workshop?
