Guest guest
Hi all, I know there's been a lot of discussion about wandering. I was wondering, does anyone have any experience with utilizing a companion dog for this? I've been reading where dogs are being used to keep wanderers close (at least autistic kids), and/or to warn caretakers if their charges are wandering. I'm thinking that this is a great idea! My family wants to get a dog, but how about a companion/service dog for Conner's wandering ways? thanks, > > From: pvoorhies@... > Date: Mon, 17 May 2010 18:04:28 -0400 > Subject: Re: DS in the News > > Yyyyyy yyyyyyyytyytyyty > > ------------------------------------ > > Click reply to all for messages to go to the list. Guest guest
Yes, I really believe in dogs as companions, and I guess the more I think/talk/research it also seems that a dog would be able to give Conner the independence that he's going to want. At this point, he isn't excaping anything, he just doesn't really have a clue about danger. He has a lot of freedom in the house, in the yard, and at the risk of my heart/nerves he is allowed to do a lot....but.....he just runs and won't stop. Laughing all the way. We all want a dog so I think we'll give it a try, whether it becomes certified or not, we'll see. Thanks everyone, Date: Wed, 19 May 2010 08:43:29 -0500 From: jtesmer799@... Stahome@... A co worker just received a dog for her child from this organization. http://www.cci.org/site/c.cdKGIRNqEmG/b.3978475/k.3F1C/Canine_Companions_for_Ind\ ependence.htm It has been a process that has taken about 2 yrs, i think. Her son is severely disabled and they were first told about canine companions when they were at Give Kids the World in Florida. She and her husband have both been certified for the dog so if one is at work the other can still take the dog with. She is very impressed with all the people involved in the program, so impressed that she is having a perennial plant sale with proceeds going to this organization. Dogs are really great, always figured out where had gotten to by calling the dogs, they followed her around everywhere.
