matt, thanks for this excellent post. i will relate my personal experiences.

first, to let you know, i have lots of large nasty worms inside my colon. i

had my amalgams removed many years ago. i have supplemented magnesium for a

long time and will continue to do so until i can get all i need from food. i

have taken dlpa for 3 or 4 months now and have noticed excellent results as

far as depression goes. dlpa converts to tyrosine which is one of the main

ingredients of thyroxin. i have recently read that tyrosine can act as an

anti-oxidant. anyway, dlpa does great things for me. given that i am severely

deficient in it, and i respond so well to it, can you take a stab as to what

other nutrients and or co-factors i might almost be deficient in.? if i could

get a good night's sleep i would dance naked on my rooftop in glee.

i have seen magnesium work on my ex-girlfriend. she was an absolute fiend for

chocolate. almost cartoon-like. and when she took magnesium the cravings went

away. no easy task. also, when i start craving chocolate, which is rare, i

know i am low in magnesium.

i don't like the basic theory of brain drugs that supress chemical reactions.

i am not an expert in biochemistry, then again no human being is. God is the

expert in biochemistry. had i bought into the brain drug philosophy i would

never have discovered the true cause of my problems, and would not have stood

a chance in hell of actually correcting it. deprenyl is a nutrient? correct?

as far as i know all of the prescription anti-depressants are palliatve and

therefore flawed as far as my thinking goes. please correct me if i am wrong.

an iteresting bit of info i picked up from a biochemist was that pumpkin

seeds are a great source for the manufacture of serotonin. and fava beans

were a great source for making dopamine.

i would like to know what you think abotu sam-e. or for that matter, any

other nutrient-based supplements to improve brain chemistry.

" i think that chocolate cravings are related to magnesium defiency. (might

be

wrong) i think the cocoa, caffeine, and magnesium molecule have similar

structures. "

To coment on the above post:

The relationship is that cravings for carbohydrates (like sugar and ethanol)

are directly related to serotonin deficiency. Magnesium is a cofactor in

production of serotonin, cocoa has caffeine in it, and caffeine is an

antidepressant which acts on serotonin and dopamine. Cocoa also has the

antidepressant neurotransmitter PEA (phelylethylamine) in it, along with

certain cannabinoid compounds similar to the structure of marijuiana's

active ingredient l-delta-9-Tetra Hydro Cannabinol (THC).

PEA has been found to be deficient in many (appprox 60%) of depressed

patients, and the US drug Effexor is a PEA-class drug, which may explain

it's high degree of effectiveness. Also, and perhaps even better, L-deprenyl

selectively inhibits MAO-B at low (1-20)mg /day doses and effectively

prevents the degradation of phenylethyamine, dopamine, and serotonin.

Magnesium is a mineral, and not in the same chemical class as caffeine, and

cocoa is a cocktail of many different drugs. Adding sugar and fat to cocoa

makes it chocolate, which then makes it a different drug in that the sugar

also tends to transport tryptophane into the brain to make more serotonin.

The sugar also helps maintain a high insulin level which is great if you

wish to have high blood pressure, be overweight, and destroy your immune

system. Magnesium, by contrast, is nature's anti-hypertensive, however most

Americans are deficient in same. Magnesium is also used to chelate (bind and

remove) mercury and other heavy metal toxins, so persons with a mouth full

of mercury (silver amalgam) fillings tend to have serious deficiencies in

magnesium, and consequently serotonin and many other necessary chemicals

(neurotransmitters, hormones, prostaglandins, glutathione, etc) ..

Taking d,l phenylalanine (DLPA) helps raise PEA via the d (right facing)

enantiomer portion, however those with phenylketonuria lack the enzyme to

process phenylalanine, at least the l form. This is why the notice on

nutrasweet (aspartame), because it is made of l-phenylalanine, methanol, and

l-aspartate. It is not clear to me if phenylketonurics can process the d

form. Aspartame not only transports methanol (wood alcohol) into the brain,

but can compete for transport of l-tryptophane and cause a decrease in

serotonin, thus subverting the whole weight-loss idea, which I have seen

several studies indicating no weight loss occurs with people taking

nutrasweet. Thankfully, stevia is another story I would encourage readers to

look into if they must have " sweets " .

I hope this explains the phenomenon. Next time you're at church or the kids

school, and someone states " I don't take drugs " you can ask them about that

cup of coffee (with it's 40 or so drugs in it) and the nutrasweet in it or

the chocolate cake they are eating. Be careful though, they just might take

a swing at you if thir serotonin level is too low.

Any input on the above would be welcome, as we are in the process of putting

this type of info on our website.

Sweetly,

Matt

Dear Sara:

Perhaps Raw Carob Powder can do the trick. I have been Chocolate free fro

over 20 years and I find it to be the perfect fit for me.

Great smoothies, sprinkle it, sweeten it with honey, maple syrup, coconut

will add some richness or soaked sunflower seeds in a blender. Wow. What a

flavor. A little cinnamon and or vanilla will add to the flavor too.

Charlie,

1/3-1/2 teaspoon white stevia = 1 cup sugar

1 tsp. clear liquid stevia = 1 cup sugar

> *Also If one uses powdered stevia how much is equal to one cup, or where can I

get a conversion table?*

Know that you may need to make adjustments for the bulk (less bulk with stevia

than sugar). I use a little applesauce, apple butter or yogurt.

Dear Charlie,

Use carob instead of chocolate.

I think stevia is a very individual thing. Not everybody perceives

it as sweet as most do. My dad dumped 20 drops into a cup of tea and said it

didn't taste very sweet to him. For me it is very sweet.

Maybe I missed the answer to this question. So, why is chocolate

dangerous?

Hi SaraLou. Sadly, I don't think the issue is the quality. I think it is the

cocoa itself, that blocks calcium absorption. I am still waiting for an answer

on that.

Welllll, to add a cheap note to this discourse, I just saw Droste (umlaut)

Chocolate at, of all places, Big Lots. Most upscale department stores have a

chocolate department where you'll be able to find imported choc. Also stores

that pass for deli's outside of NYC often carry some imported chocolate.

Don't you just love it when mom's do that...bless their little

hearts. My mom has a tendency to sabatoge my diets without even

knowing it. Like at Christmas, she gives me a giant ferrero rocher

box. What is a weak willed person suppossed to do??? That's why I

don't keep stuff like that in my house. I take it to work and put it

Hi ,

100% cocoa butter would be pretty hard - it's like really hard chocolate :). I

would

take the moisturiser out of its container (pot?) and melt it gently in a double

boiler

(don't over heat or you'll kill the scent - take it off the heat when it's 75%

melted

and stir until melted), then as it cools use an electric beater to whip it up

like

butter. It should go creamy yellow and be a lot easier to use. You can use it as

a

hair conditioner treatment, on all of your body, as a coat shine for your pets,

as a

leave-in conditioner if you swim in the ocean or pool, lipbalm etc.

With regards,

Emma Skelton

Calone has been identified as the one new ingredient in perfumes that

Angel stinks of cumin to me, and I'm always surprised nobody mentions it.

Not nice cumin, overdone cumin that has festered in an armpit overnight.

Angel for women is different than Angel for men, BTW. There are several

imitators out there, McQueen's, for instance. Another stinky armpit.

Go to Walgreens. Get some Palmer's Cocoa Butter Lotion in the pump botle

(the squeeze one doesn't work very well.) It is creamy, wonderful and you

will smell like chocolate. Great stuff, cheap, too.

I made some nice Virgin Organic Coconut Oil and chocolate asolute body oil.

Have to shake the bottle each time to disperse. Didn't someone write that

chocolate abs does disperse in jojoba?

Speaking of chocolate, my sister found a solution to me being unable

to say no to good chocolate, that is -- find the purest chocolate you

can find (usually 86% is the max), make sure it's bitter and doesn't

lack taste. I find if I take 1-2 pieces a day, (I think has a

chocolate a day too) it saturates my tastesbud for any other chocolate...

Lydia:

I LOVE chocolate. But it has to be rich, creamy, smooth, and DARK! I think

the " chocolate a day " is a good idea... but at PMS time OMG! I could LIVE ON

That is FASCINATING! I wonder (doubt it, but still wonder...) if anyone's

ever done a study comparing the nutrients the two have to offer. I'm sure

there's a clear correlation somewhere. I do know that the spinach offers

much-needed iron... but I don't think that chocolate does!

BTW... I love the Brit way of calling it choccy!

Re: chocolate

I've found at PMS time that I can beat off the chocolate bug by eating,

believe it or not, spinach. I keep track of that sort of stuff on my

Outlook so I know in advance. I don't like that my body messes with me for

a week out of every month, so I work at beating it. I be sure to have a

small lean steak, some whole wheat pasta and a spinach salad, or spinach,

sautéed with a little lemon and a dash of olive oil, every night for three

nights heading into that time. Seems to keep me out of the chocolate. Go

figure. OTOH I will confess that I'm not much of a chocolate eater in the

first place. It is the only time I want it.

The only way I have been successful with cravings to sugar, chocolate, wheat is

to entirely eliminate them from my food. My body simply can't tolerate these

foods and my life is so balanced without trying to fight them by figuring out

how to fit them in...Helen in Ontario

Chocolate

For those of you who have army size chocolate cravings, and need to eliminate

sugar from your diet (or greatly reduce it) what do you do? I believe I am

craving chocolate not the actual sugar. I would be happy to something with cocoa

in it, but when I tried to make a chocolate smoothie using cocoa, it was chalky

and nasty and kids complained it was bitter.

Helen, once you get your body " cleared " of the factors that are dragging down

your Vital

Force, you will be able to withstand the occasional toxin, bad food or other

exposure. Not

that it's your goal to eat badly, per se, but it is reality and it's really nice

to have the

latitude. Of course, chronic exposure to bad food lowers your Electrical or

Vibrational

Frequency as well so you can't just stay on the sugar and preservatives if you

want to

break out of your current prison.

Most people with food sensitivities (and ALL chronically ill patients) have

problems with

one, and usually several of the following: SYSTEMIC VIRUSES, PARASITES, LYME

DISEASE,

HEAVY METALS, YEAST INFECTIONS, or low-grade chronic infections such as ROOT

CANAL

or DENTAL ABSCESSES. Until you get these problems knocked out, you will be

spinning

your wheels, just throwing your energy to the wind. The collective mind of the

parasites

also take over your thinking processes and highjack your desires. Most parasites

live on

sugar so that's what they direct you to eat. People, animals or plants that have

a low

vibration DRAW IN parasites and pathogens like a magnet.

We don't say it often enough here, but you also need to get right SPIRITUALLY,

balance

EMOTIONAL problems if they exist, get at least 1 hour of EXERCISE a day, and

at least 1

hour OUTDOORS every day. If you aren't doing these things it's a pointless waste

of time

to talk about food.

Regarding CHOCOLATE, which was why I wrote this message, my wife is a baker so

we

have bona fide chocolate in the house 365 days a year and we eat some almost

every day.

It's my belief that it's virtually impossible to abuse, over-eat or have any bad

experience

with this kind of chocolate (except for certain individuals who can't tolerate

caffeine or the

alkaloids. You can try this at home, get ORGANIC BITTERSWEET CHOCOLATE only and

it

should be a minimum of 70% cocoa solids, preferrably 80%. Forget milk chocolate

and the

sugary ones! An ounce or so of this (and you CAN'T eat much more) will satisfy

immensely

giving nothing but pleasure and no pain. You get hormone balancing, endorphins,

and

plenty of antioxidants and phytonutrients.

ACTUALLY, I THINK I DO.... All fairly normal humans have some things we all

share.

You might be able to eat 2-4 oz daily for a few days until your feelings of

deprivation and

malnutrition go away but I've never known any non-psychotic or non-mentally ill

human

being (who is eating good food) who would chose to eat more than 2 oz of DARK

BITTERSWEET 80%+ CHOCOLATE/day on a regular basis.

You will feel absolutely SATISFIED plus it takes away sugar cravings for most

people (you

do need to get rid of the other problems that create abnormal cravings as well).

Be sure to

nibble it very slowly so the satiety catches up to your mouth.

******Most overweight people eat TOO FAST or eat while they are DOING SOMETHING

ELSE.

*****Many people that get overweight because they feel hungry all the time are

ACTUALLY

THIRSTY! They are not drinking enough or the right kind of water. Thirst feels

almost

exactly like hunger.

******Most people who are hungry all the time are eating low-brix, low nutrient

density

foods. You have to go to the GARDEN, the CSA, the COOP, the FARMER DIRECT

Otherwise

your body is staving to death as you get fatter and fatter.

*******Every single person that thinks they are overweight or obese got that way

from only

one category of food. They are eating TOO MUCH CARBOHYDRATE. Sugars, starches

and

grains. Period. If you overconsume too much FAT or too much PROTEIN God

created a

satiety loop called nausea. This doesn''t happen with carbs, you just hit the

insulin, the

sugar goes down (after your incredible " high " -the wonderful sugar rush) and you

need

another fix, and another, and another, and it never stops.

*********Dr Mercola says that the #1 cause of obesity in America......the low

calorie diet.

these diets create the " deprivation-justification " mode, cause you

to obsess about

eating and throw the autonomic hormone system into the STORE FAT

mode.

********Dr Mercola says the #1 thing in your house that WILL MAKE YOU FAT is....

YOUR TV SET. Seriously, right after you toss the microwave, it's

really important to

ditch the TV. Even a " good " TV show will rot your creativity, your

passion, your

drive, your purpose, and your will. It's programmed into the

vibrational frequency

intentionally. The second you turn it on, your CEREBRUM goes numb.

That leaves

the lower brain functions, the EMOTIONS (reptile brain) and the

BASIC FUNCTIONS

the brain stem, where appetite comes from. Then the commercials

and the sub-

liminals start massaging those parts and you are gone. In America,

obesity is

directly proportional to the amount of TV watched.

porridge every once in a while. Our favorite around here is teff porridge with

cocoa in it, though I think that our dear villagers assume that I am feeding

them chocolate malt-o-meal. I don't have a recipe because I just add enough to

make it look and taste right to me. We sweeten ours at the breakfast table

with honey or molasses. I was worried the first time that the cocoa would make

people want to add more sweetener, but it seems that they actually use less

than usual. It is so good with raw milk and butter!
