Casey, When my Hannah had her surgery, she ended up staying in the

hospital for 12 days. She was in ICU for 9 days. Her surgery went well.

The problem was she wouldn't breath on her own when they went to pull the

breathing tube out. They would try a little everyday and turn down the

oxygen a little at a time. Then her vocal cords started to swell and they

couldn't pull the tube out at all. So they gave her steroids trying

to get the swelling down. Her vocal cords returned to normal and the tube

came out! Yay!!! She got her own room and we were out of there in

a couple of days. She also had a little complication with the incision

they made on her wrist to put the IV. The whold experience for us was not

a pleasant one I must say. Having to only see your child every 4 hours

at 15 minutes at a time for 9 days was heartbreaking.

I am not trying to scare you just want you to be prepared for anything.

Like I said, the heart surgery went really well. It was just those darn

vocal cords that didn't want to cooperate. : )

I think for Hannah it took her a few days after being home before she

went back to herself. She bounced back with flying colors. Without the

surgery, she would not be with me today. Before she had the surgery she

would not eat or hardly move. Now she won't be still and she eats like

a pig. lol.... She is my Hannah Banana...............

Hello

all,

To you who have experience

with heart surgery. . . . . how long did it take

for your child to be moving

around some and back to themselves in terms of

mood and emotion?

What about physically. . . . how long until you didn't

have to be careful about

how you picked them up or protect them from siblings

(affection) and they were

moving the way they had before the surgery? How

miserable is likely

to be while in the hospital? They are

estimating 4-5 days there,

does that fit with your experience(s)? I'm trying

to get prepared for what

I/we are in for as the day is approaching faster

than I am ready for.

I appreciate whatever input and experiences you all

have to share. That

is one of the many wonderful things about this group --

common experiences and understanding.

Thank you!

Casey, mom to

(DS) and , 19 mo.

My dear sweet 1 1/2 year old daughter is having open-heart surgery in a few

weeks.   I'm wondering if anyone has any advice to offer.  I am not unusually

worried but thought the group may have some words of wisdom to share.

Thank you,

Hi Carol,

my son Tait has the AVSD open heart at 5 1/2 months. Believe me, I will

admit I was a wreck. But it helped once I talked with the surgeons, knew

what to expect so ask questions. The other thing is that our kiddos are

strong, Tait bounced back and flourished after the surgery. Make sure

you have a support system in place, help for when you are staying in the

hospital during and after. We didn't have that and it was hard. We

really found out who are true friends were during this time. So utilize

families and friends. Will keep in our prayers.

My girl had 2 surgeries, ages 3 days and 5 months. The very good news for

you is twofold: A: She is 1 ½ before needing surgery – excellent! B:

Children w/ds, for some reason, do better following heart surgery, i.e. they

recover faster than kids wo/ds. Go figure. One of the few places we get a

much needed break. What kind of surgery is she having?

You will be in my prayers.
