If he only does this at school, then it sounds as though the problem is with

the school. Is this an attention-getting device? Do his caregivers at school

adore him too much and allowing him to get away with things you do not?

Another thought - is he unhappy about something and this is his only way of

getting your attention.

Subject: Help with 5 year old going through the terrible 2's

I am at my wits end with my son Ivan. He was " successfully " daytime potty

trained by September 08 and has done extremely well, in my opinion, over the

last year having very few accidents. I would say once a month or less. Since

October he has wet himself with increased frequency at preschool and he has

wet himself consistently every other day for the last 4 to 6 weeks,

sometimes wetting himself 2 or 3 times a day. He has also begun taking his

shoes off many times a day. I tried putting him in shoes that tie and double

knotting them and he gets them off too. Today he stripped down to his

underwear 5 times at naptime.

Does anyone have any advice? The school is really patient with him. The

Director and her aid are both elderly women and they ADORE him, but I have

got to get this behavior under control before he starts Kindergarten next

year. He only does this at school.

Help?!

Hi ...

Can't really address the potty issue....

But, my son is 16 years old and he HATES shoes and pants. The minute he

gets home from school, he strips down to his tidy whities and whatever shirt

he has on. I don't recall every doing a poll, but it wouldn't surprise me

if many of our kids prefer coolness over heat. He has heat sensitivity in

the summertime, too.

I think these are definitely attention getting and idle hands issues. While the

ladies at the school do favor Ivan I think they also try very hard to teach him

social skills and they have always used age appropriate discipline such as time

out. On the other hand, his teacher is new to teaching preschool, she's not a

certified teacher, and I do think she is in over her head and has acted

inappropriately on more than one occasion. His behavior did take a major

nosedive when he moved into her class.

Hi,

I agree with .  I have a hard time with Ana (17) wearing the appropriate

cloth in winter.

, my daughter used to take her cloth off all the time, even in public

places, it was really embarrassing,  one time she came out of the play ground

in a BK (where the little balls are)  completely naked!  My two older sons,

ran to cover her.  Gradually, she stopped doing that.  Shoes were also (and

still are) an issue.

I've given up the fight on long sleeves versus short. He will fight against

long sleeves. He's still trying to wear shorts to school - in Decemeber - in

NY. I tell him they will arrest me if I let him do that. Last year we went

through a dozen pairs of gloves and almost as many hats. Luckily we have 99

cent stores. At home or the babysitter's shoes and socks have to come off right

away and he's famous for hiding the socks at her house so he comes home without

them. I buy socks --3 dozen at a clip. Since he runs out of his and grabs mine

I just but adult size whites ones,

Yes, heat and taking off shoes and socks is a big issue here too.

same with Nic kinda. Shoes will immediately come off and sometimes even in

the car. He will put on his jammies as soon as he gets home. He does mind

the heat in the summer too.

I am reminded of something my grandmother told me long ago: " A sweater is

something a kid has to wear when his mother is cold. "

It took me years to realize that is very warm-natured and smart

enough to know when she is cold and when she is hot. I only advise her about

appropriate dress when she asks these days.

I don't want to overreact but frequent urination and wetting can be a symptom of

diabetes. That's how I realized my son had it. Make sure he gets tested. With

my son, the pediatrician didn't believe me. One of my sisters-in-law works for

an OBGYN and got me a testing strip so I could test him myself. When his urine

read high in sugar, they sent us for lab testing. The results were high so we

were sent to the emergency room. His blood sugar was 691. 100 is normal. The

pediatrician was so apologetic and the emergency room was amazed he was still

conscious.

It's probably not diabetes, but please check. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune

disease and they are more common in our kids. As for the behavioral part I don't

have any real answers for you. We have sporadic issues here too. Just know

that behavior is communication so he may be trying to tell you something.
