Has anyone else run into such un-educated people having weight-loss

surgery? I didn't realize that CVB did so much more than other

many people that have had surgery done by Dr. Rabkin's group in SF,

and they seem to have gone through a bit of education too. I just

figured everywhere would be like that.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's common here in Alabama. They know that someone they have seen has

lost weight with the WLS and go to a surgeon. From there they just go on their

merry way. There is usually no " education " when I had my RNY all I was told was

if I ate no concentrated sweets or regular cokes or juices, I would lose

weight. He didn't tell me about having a feeding tube(Revised VBG), no post op

instructions except those above and take a MVI daily. I became b12 defecient,

had

super high parathyroid levels from my body leeeching calcium and had 2 spinal

compression fractures before I realized the RNY was killing me.

It is really sad that a doc can go in and rearrange a persons insides and

leave them with so little knowledge that they don't even know what surgery

they had, but it happens at least once a week or two on the WLS revision board

i'm on. They either don't know what surgery they had or even know what was

done. The worst is the ones who don't even know there are any other surgeries.

Then if you don't know what can go wrong...how about follow up? I went to my RNY

surgeon until I got cussed at 2 times in a row for not losing enough or

gaining a pound. I said to Tom " screw this, I can beat myself up bad enough

without

having this idiot do it " and never went back. There were no support groups, I

hung out with a few people who had the RNY and that was my " support " but when

my losing stopped and I got sick, they were unwilling to see what happened.

they just kind of drifted away.

And I'm an Rn can you imagine what a lay personn with no internet and no

medical knowledge can have happen?

Ron, I was one such person. I am a revision to DS from the RNY which was a

complete failure in my case.

I found out about the RNY when a friend had it in Salt Lake City. She lost

about 100 pounds and 9 years later, she has kept it off - an abnormal

situation from what I have read about the number of failed RNY operations.

So, I called the Salt Lake surgeon's office and made an appointment. I met

him for exactly 15 minutes the day before surgery, and saw him a total of

about 30 minutes after surgery (I was in hospital 4 days). That was it. No

follow up, no newsletter, nothing but the bill.

There was no education about the RNY-nothing whatsoever. All I knew is that

I would loose weight. And I did, about 50 pounds and then put it all back on

even though I was eating hardly anything.

So, there are people out here who know nothing about the surgery. When I

stumbled upon Dr. K and the DS, I read everything I could on the procedure.

I did not go into this surgery uninformed. And, I had several hours with Dr.

K before the surgery. IT was a combination of Dr. Ks educational plan and

his integrity.

All the time, Ron, all the time. I keep getting people who say, " I'm going

to have the same surgery as you! " I question, " Who's the doctor? " They reply

and I say...that doctor doesn't do the DS --he's RNY surgeon. They say well

there's no difference, right? I explain, pass out the web address, and they

still go the way of the RNY. People sometimes don't even WANT to be educated.

I find it extremely frustrating...so many, many people lump WLS under

" gastric bypass " and think it is all the same. I am a woman on an educational

crusade! LOL

Laurie,

that's why I don't complain too much about my VBG. I lost from 433lbs and

went down to 270's so I lost 160lbs. So in 14 yrs I had kept off more than

100lbs. So restriction would have worked for me if I hadn't had SO much to lose.

Then the vomiting started and the soft high carb foods. I never started

gaining lots until My RNY (in 1996) and in 1999 I was 299lbs and when he undid

my

restriction, I started gaining at a large pace after the initial post op

losses. I have no doubt that without surgery I'd once again be 400+ now.

Sounds good. The traditional way of studying did not suit my style of learning at all. I really look forward to more individual-adapted ways of studying in the future.

Inger

Education

Time pressures were a major reason I took the course I did. It wasn't a traditional sit in a classroom all day every day thing. Rather, it was structured for working adults.

The college, which is based on the other side of the state but has a branch about 40 miles from here, rented a room at the local junior college. This was very convenient for me since I live just a few miles from that college.

Classes met one night per week, Thursday nights in our case, and we met for 4 hours. Usually we met for less than that, however. The class was divided into study groups of between 3 and 5 people. Each study group had to meet for 4 hours outside of class every week to work on projects and such. The groups could meet when and where they liked, and again most of us didn't meet for a full 4 hours either since it rarely took that long to finish what we had to do.

We also only had one course at a time, each taking 5 or 6 weeks. With a few breaks for major holidays and some other breaks, it took about 9 months to get the degree.

I thought this was a very good way to run things. It worked very well for all of us. Not only did we learn the course material, but also a great deal about group dynamics, and in my case more about leadership since I was the team leader of my group. We had one class that looked like it was going to be very tough and math heavy. Two people dropped that particular class and one of my team was going to go as well. The other team mate and I talked him into sticking it out. The class turned out toe be only moderately hard and my friend got a B, much better than having dropped it.

Too bad more classes aren't set up like this. Then again, this does seem to be a growing trend and more degrees are being offered. This could be a big thing in the future.

Margaret we use Duncan Fennemore as our consultant and have done for the past 2 years. I’d highly rate him. He does know his stuff and has been spot on in steering my son in the right direction.
