Guest guest
oo yes yes yes definatly leave the skin on it. it will leave little green specks in the soap and looks awsome. of course they will eventually fade to a yellow but that is more like a year or more down the line. I still have some from my first batch. i believe it was my brothers favorite soap. it is what got him and his wife hooked on home made soap. here is a recipe. i advise you to soap calc it. I don't remember if it needed tweeking or not but the numbers i think are fairly right. Cucumber soap 15 oz canola oil 30 pz Coconut oil 27 oz olive oil 21 oz palm oil 5 oz shea butter 13.8 oz lye 20 oz water 16 oz cucumber (use small cucs for best results,(more green speks) Mix lye with water. cool to 90 degrees. puree cucumber (skins and all) Melt oils and cool to 90 degrees. mix oils and lye. add cucumbers. trace. add scent this recipe made about 5 pringles can. however i do not recall adding cucumbers after the lye. so that is interesting. i wonder if that is how i did it. probably. eiter way it turned out great. customers love that it has shea butter in it. tis the season for soaping vegies. next you will be making peack soap. it is almost that season. I have also soaped cantelope, tomatoe and pumpkin. i am looking to try carrots this season. and save the fruits for canning. they made great soap but but i want to eat them this winter as well. good luck. and have fun. > > Colleen, > > When I do my cucumber soap I puree the entire cuke, skin, seeds, et al. Guest guest
Colleen, I like to de-seed my cukes, too, but it's not essential. I make my lye water with half the water amt. and add it to the oils; then, I add my pureed cuke. Just one way of doing it, but I like to be sure my lye is thoroughly dissolved. I'm weird about that. Guest guest
Colleen, I made my first soap with tomatoes last year. It was a tomato/zucchini/basil kitchen soap. I tried taking most of the seeds out by running the tip of a spoon through the seed cavities of the halved or quartered tomato. I know I didn't get them all, and it didn't seem to matter. The tomatoes add whatever nutrients are in the tomato, such as vitamins A & C, to the soap. Being a wash-off product, I don't know that it really makes a difference, but I think it adds interest to the product. The one I made surprisingly worked well at removing kitchen odors. I was glad, but I didn't set out to do that. Kind of a bonus. :-) Beth www.soapandgarden.com www.soapandgarden.blogspot.com Be good to your skin! Guest guest
Well i wouldn't really coinsider that being wierd, more like being safe. wouldn't want undissolved lye in your soap. especially if it traces quickly. > > Colleen, I like to de-seed my cukes, too, but it's not essential. > > I make my lye water with half the water amt. and add it to the oils; then, I add my pureed cuke. Guest guest
Well, I'm weird about needing to see that it's all dissolved; whereas, many soapers do very well at dissolving the lye into other opaque liquids such as milk, pureed veggies, and so on. I just can't bring myself to do it. :-) Beth www.soapandgarden.com www.soapandgarden.blogspot.com Be good to your skin! www.saponifier.com In a message dated 06/30/09 11:01:23 Eastern Daylight Time, Koalas_boutique@... writes: Well i wouldn't really coinsider that being wierd, more like being safe. wouldn't want undissolved lye in your soap. especially if it traces quickly. Guest guest
my mother has been growing it in pots the past few years. last year we got quite a few average sized ones. I myself don't like it. I did try the zucchini corn fritters wegmans posted a recipe for and had samples of last year. I didn't think they were half bad then after a few I just wasn't into it again. Since we are in wine country..... have you or anyone tried making something with the grapes??? They will be all over the farmers market in another month or so. The past few years I have been tempted to try something with them. I know they can be quite seedy, never liked home grown grapes because of it but they have a strong scent. I have been meaning to ask if anyone soaped with them or have tried other things. > > Have you ever grown zucchini? Guest guest
I haven't even made wine soap yet, but I think I'd better get at it, LOL. Grape soap would be a great idea, too, although I've never done it. I'm pretty sure they would turn the soap very brown, so I'd probably use pureed grapes in moderation, but maybe I'll cook some grapes and mill them to get just the innards to use in soap. Has anyone else used them? Guest guest
I haven't used grapes to soap but have used grape juice from the bottle and used a cabernet fragrance from Lebermuth I think. I didn't like how it turned out but smelled okay. I may bring it to the Gathering as an ugly soap. Carrot juice makes a wonderful soap that has a beautiful color. I've only used juices and a pumpkin baby food that I mixed in with the water, no fresh fruits or vegies.
