Guest guest
Oh my gosh, that sounds like something you will want to keep forever! How great is that. Yesterday brought home the cedar chest he has been working on all year. It is much bigger than expected, about 2 feet long and 10 inches deep and 10 inches wide. Woodworking is a lot of fun and you might want to get your kids involved in it either at school, 4H, Scouts, or some other organization. Have a nice day Dad to , Kristi, (all three who have Down syndrome) and (Cri du chat syndrome) Husband to C. in Mo. (but currently on the West Coast) Uncle Daddy to and (both of whom have Down syndrome) BIL to in Calif.
Guest guest
Oh, I wish! They have eliminated nearly all the industrial arts in our district. Now, with the 4x4 legislation,(4 years each of Math, Science, English and History) they have no time in their schedule for any electives! You can no longer take Art and Band or Athletics and Choir. It's either /or, you have to choose. The super-duper news is that these requirements apply to ALL students. Good luck modifying Physics and Pre-Calc for my son! This madness is going to cause the dropout rate to skyrocket. What were they thinking????? BTW, there is only one school in the country that requires 4 years of each...Harvard! Oh, and you can get that waived if need be. ***Big sigh*** Karla in Texas - Wondering why we devalue those who aren't scholars? Don't we need artists and craftsmen and tradesmen? Guest guest
We are lucky to still have some of those classes, but with the A-G requirements for CA state colleges and universities, if you meet these requirements, plus the year of civics (not an A-G requirement, but a HS grad requirement), AND you still want to take music (band, choir, etc.) you will end up taking a minimum of 2 semesters of summer school (more if you don't get the computer class that also meets the practical arts requirement.) Typically the music kids take health one semester and PE one semester. A few weeks ago, they announced that because of our horrible budget problems, there will be no summer school, so all those kids are scrambling to find online classes or classes at the community colleges to meet their requirements. All our athletics are after school activities anyway, so at least that isn't affected (though it probably will be because our schools have no money.) So, I am happy that woodworking and ceramics classes still exist, but I wish that the college bound set could have a chance to take them too... everyone should have a little exposure to these types of classes. It's sad that they push them so hard, they have no time to be kids. I am hoping that some of these classes will still be around when gets to high school in a few years! Her sisters will be so jealous that she gets to take these cool classes! I agree, that legislation will cause many students to drop out. My nephew would not be in HS if he didn't have his woodshop and autoshop.... he's be out there at 16, trying to learn these things in the working world because he's not a college bound student, even though he was steered that way, my brother is smart enough to know where his interests and talents are, and it's not in 4x4 type subjects! Who comes up with this stuff? , mom to (13), (11 DS), and Sammy (9) Collarbone wrote: > > > Oh, I wish! They have eliminated nearly all the industrial arts in our > district.
