When I had a lot of gifts for to give, I would get cookies and nice

baggies and give that, just as a token. There are just too many people

sometimes to spend lots of money on.

I've not heard of giving 'year end' gifts. We have typically given teachers a

Christmas gift.

Wow! $75 on a party. Don't parents 'share' the party expenses?

Since we are nearing this time of year again - and for me, it is only 3 days

away!!! What is everyone who has kiddos in school doing about this? I have been

so focused on organizing my 4th grader classroom party, that I sort of forgot

about this. (my 4th grader) has just his teacher, but Olivia (7, ds) in

kindergarten has about 9 people I would want to give a small thank you. I keep

thinking, I would like to give them all just a $5 gift card to a local ice cream

shop, but after having to spend about $75 on the party, I am hesitating.

I would love to hear others' ideas/suggestions. Thanks!

Home made chocolates and/or biscuits is what I do every Xmas and Easter

( here in OZ our end of year is Xmas -so tis a bonus)

I also make chocolates or biscuits for the kids in the kids classes (

hope that made sense- it did as I typed it )

I then make up address labels on the pc- and write Thanks you from

- and wrap them in cellophane and give them to the teachers.

I usually put 4 or 5 biscuits and 3 or 4 chocolates for each teacher if

I do both, or just up the chocolate etc. I find homemade chocolates

quite easy, as you can melt the chocolate in the microwave and put in

the fridge- if I am watching a show on tele I wait for the ad break, do

1 batch then go back to the tele. I have quite a few molds tho- so that

makes it easy too........

Most teachers have no problem with a gift card-preferably from one of the

teacher supplies stores or similar. However, it's nice to pair with

something more personal. A card (either made by child or personalized by

child) is pretty easy and not too expensive. When Jess was younger, we did

this and could usually get her to come up with a statement about something

she liked or remembered with the teacher/ class that could be written in (or

copied or traced or wherever the child is), maybe a picture, signature by

child, etc.

I started last year going to the dollar store and creating a basket of classroom

goodies. 1 for the regular classroom and 1 for the SPED room. I do 1 at

Christmas with cookies and another at the end of the year with just supplies.

I have given gift cards to a coffee shop to teachers, aides, bus drivers.. etc

in the past. VERY expensive.

I have also made soaps, bath salts, breads.. stuff like that for many at a

time, cheaper but more time consuming so it depends on what is happening at that

time.

Often, I would just give a framed Starfish poem with a nice starfish back ground

and a card that said, " Thank you for making a difference in my son's life. "

This year.. for obvious reasons... no one got anything... and I'm really super

glad I stuck with THAT since when he graduated last week they didn't even put

his name on the list.

Now.. for my Sunday School teachers as a thank you.. I ordered little note pads

and pens from Oriental Traders.. and then I got these little photo books from

s for $1.

prizes from Oriental Trading Co. - I am trying to round up the ingredients for

the snack from the rest of the class, but out of 26 students, 10 parents

respond, and can only turn in a $2-3 item. I sort of knew this going into it - I

volunteered to do the Christmas party, but by default, I get the end-of -the

year party, too! I am more nervous about getting enough helpers for the party.

I just keep telling myself, I am doing it for the kids (which is true, I do love

the kids)!

this year I made a basket for the teacher with bath gels, lotions, loofahs

etc.

For the aids, I went to the trial sized things , they had a clear plastic

travel bag about the size of a qt sized Ziploc. Filled it with trial travel

sized things you would need when going on vacation. There are 3 aides in his

room so I had to not go crazy.

For the bus driver and aide I got a colorful water battle and filled it with

those Crystal Light individual pouches.

In the past I made the Starfish poem thing.

We have the same problem here. There are NO volunteers in Micah's

12:1:1 class. In the regular ed class there are quite a few. But as a

clas parent here UNLESS a parent volunteers you are not allowed to ask

for help so going in a class parent doesn't know how expensive the year

is going to be. But you are right I doit for the kidws.

That seems odd. When my kids were younger, we always got little notes asking

for volunteers and donations for field trips, classroom activities, etc. We

still get these—from parent volunteers, teachers, PTA, etc. even in HS for

some things.

Is it only the sped classes that have this restriction? Have you tried talking

with the teacher and asking if she can put out a request?

Seriously? Do you not have PTA? I guess I really need to count my

blessings here. As room moms, we are given a budget for the parties,

usually $3-4 per child! What a burden to try to find parents to volunteer

for the job knowing they are also going to have to finance it. I had no

idea we had it so good.

I found small, old silver platters at garage sales for .50c or less

and painted the middle with chalk board paint and tied ribbon to them

so they could hang them. It made the cutest little teacher gifts. I

had Noah write " Happy Summer " and his name on the board so they knew

they could write on them. I could send you a photo of them if you are

interested in making them, a little hard to describe in an email

I donated to DSRTF one year, and the I thought the mouse was so cute, I

sent for two more and gave them as classroom gifts to the teacher. It's a

neat little reminder of their time spent with Noah. One teacher would use it

as a reward. The kiddo that was chosen to be Noah's " helper " got to keep

the mouse at their desk. Apparently it was quite the coveted prize!

It is all classes. Things have really changed here. When my oldest

two were in grammer school (now 33 and 30) you could call every parent

on the classroom listr and ask for help or donation. Then when my now

24 year old was in school you could only send in purchased items

(afraid of poisoning I guess lol although tht was the era of the

tylenol poisonings lol) and call the people who wanted to be on a call

list. Now these many years later you can't call anyone that hasn't

volunteered...the teachers either. Things have just gone downhill over

the years and I am one who has been able to watch it with all the

different ages of my children.. Things are not getting better. Once

the kids hit Middle school, parties and the such are over completely

and field trips are rarely taken. Oh for the good old days.

We have a very active PTA, but the PTA does many other things, not

classroom parties. A room parent volunteer coordinates all the parties

and asks for parent volunteers to bring things, or if they don't want to

donate items, perhaps send in a couple dollars towards the party. I

always look at the class list posted before I decide if I will be a room

parent because I've done it before and could get the same few parents to

help out (and then have to do/bring the rest myself)... that stinks.

This year, we still have parents who don't do anything, but at least

there are enough that do so that it's pretty easy to have a party. We

break it down to small items, rather than " someone bring in 35 juice

boxes " was ask for containers of 10.... that way even if money is tight,

they might be able to send in one set.

Our big problem now is that the district has decided that as of this

year, no more homemade items are allowed to be brought to school for

children's consumption, nor is any type of cooking/preparing food in the

classroom allowed. So, typical party snacks, such as decorating a

cookie of cupcake are no longer allowed, and it's expensive to buy

cupcakes for a class of 35 kids! Also, snacks are supposed to be

healthy, which is even harder... you can only eat so many apple slices

and popcorn! I think they are just trying to prevent parties

alltogether, by making it so difficult.. you know, " more educational

minutes. "

I'm glad I only have one more year at the elementary school and party

planning!

Yeah, that's not right that you can't ask for help. I do think that lots of

people want to help, just not be the head honcho, doing it all. And really, to

give them credit, the parents that do respond are most helpful - if I ask for

one box of graham crackers, but really need 4, they will do it, or often times

donate more than one item. But it seems to be the same small group of parents

pulling the load. This is just what I see. But, I have to say, I used to be a

mom who worked, and could not make it to my son's party, and did not have enough

money left over to donate much to the class, so I am so fortunate I can do this

now.

I am so fortunate! I just wish I could be at 's party and Olivia's at the

same time!

I forgot to mention this - we do have PTO - in each school it is slightly

different. At my son's school there is no budget for class parties, at Olivia's

school I think I read somewhere that the classes get $20 for a party - that is

not much, but it is something. $3-4 a kid sounds great!

A small group of people “pulling the load†is pretty typical for

volunteering. It’s been that way as long as I’ve had kids. I think I saw a

PTA estimate at one time giving a percentage of how many people would get

involved and it was very low—something like 3%. Kind of a shame, but you do

what you do—the kids appreciate it, and they’ll remember you and what you do

for a long time after. : )

I would want to give a small thank you. I keep thinking, I would like

to give them all just a $5 gift card to a local ice cream shop, but

after having to spend about $75 on the party, I am hesitating.

So true, and it's pretty much every organization that doesn't have some

mandatory volunteer requirement. The kids appreciate it, and that's

what's important (well, at least to me... I think there are times of the

year when activities are busy that my DH would rather I was home once in

awhile, LOL.) And there are those of us who have more time (at the

moment) and can do it... so we do.

At the end of last year I gave a small box of chocolates, a magazine, and

sunscreen with a thank you note that said something about putting your feet up

and enjoying the summer. At Christmas I usually give gift certificates - for

coffee or teacher supplies or restaurants. Both my sons schools publish the

results of teacher questionaires listing favorite restaurants, treats, cola,

etc.

This year, I'm thinking something similar - maybe flip-flops, sunscreen, and

lemonade mix? Better get to work on that....

The PTA changed our party schedule this year. Previously every individual

classroom had a party on the same day at the same time. Within each grade, the

parties were supposed to be " equal " but that never worked out. This year each

grade had a big combined party in the cafeteria. It was a hit for many reasons.

The custodians weren't swamped trying to clean up extra messy classrooms,

parents could go to each child's party, the handful of us who always wind up

doing the work were united planning one party, we saved $ buying supplies in

bulk.

We also have the rule that all food must be store bought. It's a sad commentary

on the state of the world.
