Gail, many studies show that ds children don't do well with phonics. My 5

kids with ds all had phonics for years (15-20years) and never learned to read

but with the two younger ones we used a site word method and they can both

read. Getting the school to use a different method is another story..there is

a great book " Teaching Children with DS to Read " I found it very helpful and

used it to " help " the school try another method. Also reading and

comprehension are

two different things.

My teens can read at a 1st -3rd grade level but the comprehension is much

lower. The best class they ever had was when they were in jr. high and I got

them into a Kindergarten reading class. They taught reading by writing

letters in sand and pudding and macaroni, they laid on the floor and made

letters out of their bodies, my girls learned more in that class that they

ever did in special ed. I have never found another teacher that taught this

way. Good thing they were the same size as the K kids so no one ever

suspected they were older.:-) I had to sign a waiver with the school dist.

saying if they became psychologically damaged being with younger children it

was my fault....I laugh at the whole thing now :-)

Leah,

I had the Hooked on phonics. An older edition that included the SRA

reading labs. I tried it briefly with Matt, but I gave up. He is doing

well with reading (reading 1st grade books) and they have used the " sight

word " reading method with him. We are beginning to introduce some

phonics-like an S at the end of the word says " SSSSSSS " , but I really

think the entired phonics approach would be tooo abstract for Matt. We

noticed that he began to read some words by sight and decided to take

advantage of the amazing power to memorize that he has.

As for Math, We are using Math-U-See. I would strongly encourage you to

look at that. they have a web site (Mathusee.com) The guy who designed

it is a homeschooling math teacher, who has a son with Down syndrome. I

started using it for all my kids this year (It goes through Trig!) and we

love it. I got the " foundations " level for Matt, which is approx equal to

1-3 grades. I figured if we could get all of this by graduation, we would

be doing great! It includes place value to 100 (We will have to go a

little farther than that, maybe 1000, or 10,000.) money, time, addition,

subtraction and multiplication. They use a lot of manipulatives that

really make us all able to " see " math. I got the set, (like I said for my

older kids too that we homeschool) and took the books into Matt's

resource room. I told the teacher that this is what I wanted to use. She

agreed, then didnt' use it for while. When I asked for it back, (Until I

could get it on his IEP next year, I didnt' want to call another IEP just

to add that!) she said they would use it and they are. It is very slow at

the beginning. They stress totally understanding a concept before you

move on. Place value to 100 is the first thing! This is a difficult

concept. They give you lots of ideas for games to do to reinforce this.

We are working on it during track break. IF you do order it, get the

supplemental workbook, too. They wrote this for children who may need

some extra practice on paper. IF you tell them that your child is

handicapped, they will give you permission to copy the pages for extra

worksheets for that child. I just cant' say enough about this program.

One of the best things is that it has higher than imaginable resale on

homeschooling bulletin boards. If you got the program and didnt' like it,

it would sell for very close to the original price in a very short (like

hours) time!

Ok, I've rambled enough. Do go and look at it!

Leah,

Matt's " level " for Math and reading are so hard to pin point. He can read

fairly well, especially yesterday when I gave him some ritalin! He used

to be on it, but has developed a tic from it. I had leftovers and I tried

it again. Back to the tic, but concentration is great! He is reading in

a " primer " level-basically about the beginning of first grade. I have

purchased the readers from our homeschool company (Seton homestudy

school-we are Catholic, this is a VERY Catholic curriculum) and have

talked him into reading these at home by telling him that these are our

" Jesus books " and we dont' read " Jesus books at school. Only at home " .

FOr now, he is buying that! (That stubborn putting every action and every

person into a " box " and that is the only place you can experience that

action or person thing!) The books are the 1st grade level, and they

really start " reading " in the 31st week of the program. So, toward the

end. Of course, they go much quicker through the books than we are, but

that is ok. We will go as fast as we need to. I try to get him to look at

the pictures too to help answer my questions. Part of the problem is that

I'm not sure he understands the questions. Those " Who, what, where " type

words, he gets mixed up, all the time! So it is not fair to say he does

or doesn't understand because I cant' realistically test him. I do know

that he reads much quicker than he can say the words. He scans the lines

and will say end words before reading the line. Or, some lines say " up,

up, up " or " No, no, no " or some other equally great literary words, and

he will immediately laugh and say " 3 up " . He knows, and knows it is funny

because it is not expected!

As for Math, they have taught him to do some basic addition facts and say

them. Sounds cute 'one pwus two eqwaus free " . But does he have any idea

at all what he did? Nope. I can say to him> " You have one apple and I

have two apples. How many all together? " He has no clue. That is where

Math U see is great. They emphasize that the reason we learn math at all

is to do word problems. We have to make sure he gets some kind of idea of

what to do, and when to do it. He can recognize numbers to about 100, but

that is good some days and not good other days. He can write all the

numerals except a 6. He knows our phone number and address, and is

working on writing the street name. Of course, our street is " Antelope

Valley Avenue " . Couldnt' be anything easy, could it?

Hope I answered your questions. I have great hope that he will continue

to progress.

learns to read by sight word method too, its part of his computer

program, they have pics for the words and he learns them with the pics then

matches them and then by themselves etc, he has over 40 reading words in his

book allready and he just started this program this year, it also has books

it makes on the computer with the same words learning and he reads thruogh

them, loving them, and apparently understanding them. ive also read that

phonics are not for those with ds. shawna.

I have a question. What are your kids in the upper grades (Middle/Jr. and High

School) doing for Reading? I just had a meeting at school and the reading is

just occasional hit and miss as with holiday stories and such. I just feel so

defeated since we entered middle school and now high school. Just sweep the

floors and clean a few tables and your good to go. Sorry just needed to vent a

little too.

Thanks,

We are using a combination of Orton Gillingham and Read Naturally. Both work

on decoding, fluency and phonics. I love them. They do require a little

training to implement at home (esp OG), but likes them and I do too.

She has definitely improved this year. Small gains, perhaps, but gains to be

sure. The OG program was recommended to us by the educational specialist at

the DS clinic in Cincy Children's Hosp.

Hope this helps,

Eleanor
