Or 's....I had a father and daughter stop at my booth at the last big

craft show. The father said 'Oh my little girl here makes this stuff too'

When I asked where she got here supplies she, the daughter (about 12)

answered 'Oh at s'. I proceeded to ask her what 's because I

had never seen OO or shea butter or lye at 's. She said she didn't

use 'that stuff'. " Well' I said, 'then your soap is really not like mine is

it?' I was just a tad angry and was glad there were no other customers

around at that particular time.

Oh, yeah! I take great care to explain just how it works and how it's

different. People just don't know any better.

I always had the same problem with my handmade, hand-pounded ash splint baskets.

As you said, people didn't know any better and even when it was explained, they

didn't get it... I don't expect it to be any different with this.

That's cool, . We cut down a black ash a couple of years ago, I think

it was. You could have had it all! You'd really have to find someone who

appreciated the knowledge and workmanship that went into something like that.

It almost takes another artisan to do it.

LOL... Sorry ....Hand Pounded Ash Splint:

First you find a nice straight black ash tree. Then get permission from the

owner to cut it down. You cut down the tree. Limb it. Cut it to the lenghs you

need (usually the longer the better). Take off the bark. Pound down the length

of the tree to crush the cambium layers between growth rings. This will allow

one to lift the " splint " in layers. Each layer is then cleaned. Rough surfaces

are scraped smooth. Edges are trimmed to even them out.

Sometimes the splint is cut in half through the thickness and then " peeled "

apart. That creates a very satiny finish on the wood. That is really

beautiful!

The splints are cut into the width one needs for the basket one is making.

That is hand-pounded ash splint. Now you have the material to weave a basket...

And people expect you to sell it for the same amount as an imported basket or

one made of already prepared materials like reed (which is very nice material).

Even when I demonstrated the processes, people still " didn't get it " (the cost

difference)

Different baskets and basket materials are kind of like the differences in soap

making and the ingredients... except a WHOLE lot more physical labor! LOL

IMHO..... I can understand you felt insulted.....but that was a

little harsh tword the little girl. They are ignorant to the fact of

how real soap is made, and maybe you could have explained the

differences to clear up there ignorance; which possiblly could have

braught you more clients. Just my Humble OPINION!

I did try to explain the difference but to the father soap was soap. The

girl could have cared less. You had to be there....no amount of explaining

would have cleared their ignorance.

To some people soap is just soap. Once I tried to give some soap as a gift

to my brother and his wife, and what he said to me was " we already have

soap " ..... Totaly clueless but you cant change the world if they dont care

That was awful!!! Some people just don't stop and slow down and

learn..... Could you imagine if something tramatic happend in the

world..... Us crafty people who need to know how to do everything

would survive but would be taxed (physically) because they'd drive

us nuts to make it for them!! IMHO...

, these baskets sound awsome!!!! I was watching the antique road show

the other day and one person had an old old basket that was signed by I

guess a famous basket maker in his day. The value given was like $6000.

My hubby was... but its just a basket!!! But he is kinda starting to

understand the uniqueness of some things.
