I put her on the bus with her brother and neighborhood kids and it was no big deal. You see how different things are around the country. Here (on Long Island) they make a placement for your child on the SPED bus when you have your CSE meeting (IEP). I wouldn't have had the opportunity to just put Micah on the the bus I would have to follow what is in his IEP. It has worked to our advantage though as he sits in the front seat by bus driver. In fact I laughed out loud tha tyou got to go ON the bus for three days. I had to call my state assemblyperson (she is a woman I know) in order to get on the bus to buckle him into his seatbelt when he started school. Policy is no parent allowed on bus AT ALL! I raised hell. Micah was all of 20 pounds and wearing a size 18 month clothing when he started school. After my assemblywoman called the super of schools it just " kinda happened " without any acknowledgement from anyone that I could get on the bus and bucklue him in. His aide did the return trip. I had written a letter telling them that I had told them I would sign any waiver they wanted to absolve them from any liability from my actions or getting hurt on the bus, in order to buckle him in. I then told them that sionce they stillrefused to allow me to buckle him in that I was putting them on notice that they would be liable for any injury he incurred. And that at 20 pounds of weight i the school bus stopped short he was GONNA get hurt. SIGH~~~the things we have to go through Loree Psssst...Have you heard the news? Guest guest
This is exactly WHY I am homeschooling Logan this year. They would not let me see his sped classroom at the school where they were placing him. I could go see it after school hours, but not while the teacher and students were in session. I had not even MET his teachers and they felt I should send him on the bus with a stranger and spend the day with strangers who didn't even KNOW his behaviors or his needs. Yet, in the same district, less than a mile away, in the school that my other children go to, I am allowed to go in and out whenever I want to. Puts up red flags for me. I would not allow my child to be in a room that I am not allowed in.
Guest guest
I dont know why some schools are so against parents just seeing the room or walking preschoolers to class once in a while. So many teachers complain about parents NOT being involved and NOT caring- when they find a parent who is active and involved-they turn us away. Guest guest
Barb here in WV I'm mostly a lurker but I've posted two days in a row now...hee hee. I'm outta control. :-) According to the bus rules http://wvde.state.wv.us/policies/p4336.html 3.3 Enrolled students, employees or persons approved by a county board of education are the only passengers to be transported by the county school transportation system. Hey Eleanor, I'm assuming you were an approved passenger, otherwise, I would suggest that they were breaking the rules big time by allowing you to ride the bus as you stated. I would be stopped dead in my tracks if I were to attempt to board the bus. We didn't even ride the bus on field trips. You followed along in your car. Also, (scratching my head) if your child has an IEP then transportation is usually discussed at IEP meetings. In our county you either have special transportation needs or you don't. It's not mandatory that you ride the special ed bus but if you need a support person on the reg bus then things can get interesting. Here we have many children that need to ride the special education bus and many children that need the support of an aide. I have a friend who recently had to insist on the special education bus. Her child wanted to get naked (sensory with bra) and so the regular bus was off limits until they get things straightened out. Early on my son rode the special education bus to school. I didn't understand why they would run two buses (reg and special) but what do I care because 's safety was my main priority. He had an excellent driver and the aide was very careful to make sure he was safe to and from school. I never had a worry. It was during 3rd grade that I discovered that was being taken all over the county (OK, somewhat exaggerated before being taken to school and also when coming home from school. The bus driver told me that they kept adding kids to her run and that they were spread out in all directions. was arriving late to school and eating breakfast in the classroom. He was leaving early from school but was arriving home much later than his brother who rode the regular bus. Thus, my 4 page letter to the director of transportation, principal, director of special education, and bus driver. has since been riding the regular bus with his brother (with the support of an aide.) I didn't know that I could/should ask for compensatory instruction for lost time. Lots of stuff I don't know. The shortened day here is accepted for those that ride the special ed bus. Perhaps it doesn't matter because the education they're missing isn't worth the trouble of fighting for the xtra half hour. There..I said it out loud. Needing an overhaul here...big time. I believe they (school) told me one time that you are not counted absent after 1:30 (don't quote me on that) I'm sure that if I were to pick brother up at that time every day the story would change. He would miss his entire 4th block. Looks different when you look at it that way, huh? Guest guest
yes, thats the case I found too. also, I was just informed, now they have the kids sitting on a bench inside to doors and don't let them out until 3:40, so they are still being sent up early just not sent outside. UGH!!!!!!!!!! Di Judge not, and ye shall not be judged. Condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned. Forgive, and ye shall be forgiven. Guest guest
I understand the need for buses, but if you live 5 minutes drive away, and they can wait for 1 hour for the bus, why can't they walk home? Wouldnt that be faster?
