From http://www.fitday.com :

One egg white: 16 calories, 0 carbs, 3g protein. So, to get 25g of

protein, you'd need about 8 or 9 egg whites (128 cals, 24g protein).

Or, you can do what I think tastes a little bit better--use one whole

egg (93 cals/6g protein/1g carb) and 5 egg whites for a total of 175

calories, 24g of protein, 7 grams fat, 2 grams carbs.

For tofu, 3 oz or 1 " slice of regular soft tofu has 45 calories, 4g

protein, 2.5g fat, and 2g carbs. So, you'd probably want to eat about

six times that amount (seems like a big amount), which would then

have 270 cals, 24g protein, 15g fat and 12g carbs. That's a lot of

calories and fat for a protein source, IMO.

There's a lite version of tofu listed at fitday, and the stats on

that are: 3 oz (1 " slice) has .5 grams fat, 5 grams protein, 1g carb

and 30 calories. A full protein serving would have 25g protein, 2.5

grams fat, 5 grams carbs and 150 calories. Definitely sounds like a

better choice.

Thanks for the fast reply Maggie. How many grams of fat does one egg

white have? Also, is it harmful to drink uncooked egg whites?

Wow, after doing the math that comes out to 72 eggs per week for two

people eating 6 eggs daily. I wonder how expensive that is going to

be.

Egg whites have no fat; all the fat of the egg is in the yolk.

I don't think I'd drink raw eggs...I live in fear of food poisoning,

but that's just me.

I find egg whites less expensive than chicken or other kinds of

protein. I can usually get a dozen eggs for 79 cents where I live and

I go through at least 4 dozen a week just by myself. Also, it takes a

heck of a lot less time to cook up some egg whites than to cook

chicken, lots of nights I stir fry my whites with brown rice and

frozen veggies and a dash of teriyaki...great quick stir fry. Really,

the only inconvenience is finding room in the fridge for all of the

cartons.

Some people scramble their whites and their oatmeal in the same pan,

add a little vanilla extract, Splenda and some cinnamon and maybe a

handful of raisins and it's really not that bad at all!

I've heard of people doing it both ways. I've only done it with

cooked oatmeal though, and it's surprisingly not bad at all, very

filling.

I think it would only take one violent cramping, barfing, fevered trip to the

emergency room to take all the fun out of drinking eggs raw like Rocky. :-)

Re: Stats for eggwhites/tofu needed?

I plan to have 6 eggs every morning so to be on the safe side I may

cook them.
