Guest guest
I tried responding earlier this week, but the server didn't send the message.... I don't have family history of excessive sweating. I have an older sister (mid 40s that is hot, but she doesn't sweat like me) and another older sister (also mid-40s) that has hot flashes, but she's also gone through menopause already due to complications and a hysterectomy. I just seem to sweat at any movement and then at night, but not every night. I get flushed and very tired during sweating. I am in a community band and for the past 2 weeks I have been drenched to the bone sweating from the time I got there until I left. Everyone else was hot and fanning, but I was soaked. Looked like I had just gotten out of a shower. I took my bp last night when I got home and it was 131/100, but it was also time for my evening dose of pills. Last week I was so weak when I got home I barley had enough energy to take off my shoes and my husband asked if I was ok. So, obviously I did not look well. I do have heart flutters and high pulse rates sometimes, but nothing I have noticed when I am hot and sweating. I sweat a lot during the winter time as well, so it just isn't the most recent heat wave triggering the sweating. I freeze my husband all year long and it is very rare that I am cold. I don't know if any of this helped with your questions. I am just not sure if I am so hot and sweat so much becuase of the high bp or becuase of something else. Thanks! Guest guest
> >I will keep track of my bp and hr when I am sweating and let you know after several readings. I only had low potassium at one time and that was 10 years ago as I was admitted to the hospital for my extreme high bp. I had been sick at my stomach a lot and not keeping down food on a regular basis, so that was their reasoning for the low level. Right now I have enough potassium, as I get it checked every 6 months given I am on both spiro and a diuretic, and I have not been indicated one way or the other to supplement my diet or change my diet. I don't think I have ever been tested for pheochromocytoma that I am aware. I am 31. I have one sister that has gone through menopause and she did that in her late 30s/early 40s b/c of her hysterectomy. Other 2 sisters are in the their 40s (one mid- and the other late) and not experiencing any symptoms. My Mom was in her early to mid 50s when she went through it and I remember some hot flashes but not excessive sweating. My 2 sisters are not on any medications and are much healthier than myself or my other sister. My Mom was not really sick, except for high cholesterol, until her mid-50s when her smoking caught up with her and her heart. > In a message dated 8/4/06 9:28:20 AM, toniab_13@... writes: > > > > > > I don't know if any of this helped with your questions. Guest guest
My sugar levels are up to 108 (fasting), but I am changing my diet and hope they will come back down below 100 in the next test. I don't have the capability of checking my sugar when I am sweating, so I can't provide those readings. Hearing someone else's story makes me feel better, so thanks for the input!!! Guest guest
As in saying she was not sick, I meant that she did not present any symptoms of her heart disease (or much else) until her mid-50s and was not on any medication except her cholesterol medication. I am perfectly aware from talking with her surgeon how bad she really was internally and exactly what damage her years of smoking and high cholesterol did to her. I am also aware how one dies with complications from heart disease and lung disease and how painful and scary it is. So, in comparison between my Mom's states of living, she was not " sick " before her mid-50s. > > > In a message dated 8/4/06 1:50:35 PM, toniab_13@... writes: > > > > My Mom was not really > > sick, except for high cholesterol, until her mid-50s when her > > smoking caught up with her and her heart. > > > > > As the above notes calling someone not really sick who smokes and has high > cholesterol is one of the biggest myths we have today. Guest guest
Hi Farah I have this sweating problem going on it was the first thing along with my high blood pressure that went out of wack. If i take 50mg of atenolol it all goes away pretty much. If I take only 25mg atenolol I am in sweat again. I guess it is all so different for each and evey one of us. I'm going to get my adrenline hormones checked next. ita > > Dr. Grim, > I am also having severe sweating. Being on Spiro only for about a year now > it appears the sweating is getting worse. Guest guest
Hi Have you ever tried Vitamin E for your painfull breasts. It worked for me very well when I was on estrogen getting soar breasts. My Dr.suggested Vit E. I was surprised how it helped. How do you stay well in the weather in PI?. Do you have to be really carefull in the hot and humid air. I lived in PI for a year, it is so beautiful and the food was divine especialy the sea food. I was in Caloocan city, Biesa. ita Hi Farah, Before I joined our group here, I had extreme night sweating especially on the head area, such that my pillow would be soaking wet literally. Guest guest
Tonia, Yes I have the terrible sweating, too. One doctor prescribed Zoloft for it, but an hour after taking the first pill, I started having a horrible burning sensation in my hands and feet so I didn't take any more. It did seem to help the sweating but I just couldn't tolerate it. The burning sensation is another symptom that I have along with an inflamation in the bottoms of my feet that is much worse with some drugs. I have had the pain for almost 6 years and doctors tell me it is diabetic neuropathy although I don't have diabetes. Endos say it isn't. I have read that adrenal tumors can cause sweating. I have some kind of abnormal hot flashes that start the sweating. The heat starts in the back of my head and goes down my spine. Estrogen does not help it so GYNs say it isn't from menopause. The sweating started about the same time my bp started going up. In desperation, I have started acupuncture and on my first visit when I told the acupuncturist about the heat and sweating, he said that told him something. He showed me a chart of the body's " channels " and one of them goes up the spine, across the back of the head and down the other side of the spine, exactly where I feel the heat. He says I have liver and kidney deficiency. I have had 7 treatments now and the sweating seems to be a getting better. I can tolerate the heat better. I will post more on the results of accupuncture later. Fran > > Does any or all high blood pressure meds cause excessive sweating? Guest guest
Tonia, I forgot to mention that I also have underactive thyroid but it is OK on synthroid. Thyroid shouldn't cause sweating unless it is overactive. When my bp suddenly shot up in May 99 and I was having a lot of hot flashes and sweating, I thought my thyroid was overactive (at the time I was on 75 mg Synthroid). I asked my primary (only dr at that time) what the thyroid was doing. He looked at my chart and said he didn't check it last year and he didn't check it then either. A few days later, I asked to be admitted to the hosp for my bp (240/110) and when they checked my TSH, it was over 8 so it definately wasn't my thryoid. I also get very tired and sometimes I just have to take a nap only to wake up 10 minutes later with a " hot flash " and sweating. After that I am no longer tired. I have tried for years to associate it with my bp and I think it jumps up just BEFORE the hot flash and then goes down after. I tried to find readings but didn't usually write down when I was sweating. I know I have just happened to check it a few times and it was real high (160s) and then the heat started within a couple of minutes. Stress or anger will also trigger a " hot flash " . No one in my family has anything like this either. I do not have any sisters but my mother died at the age of 93. She was overweight for over 45 years and had high bp for a good number of those years. She never had anything like the sweating and said she never had any problems with menopause, she just quit having periods when she was in her early 50s. If anyone is interested, she has 2 sisters still living who have also been overweight most of their lives. One is 93 and the other is 91 and both have congestive heart failure that developed around age 90. Non of them ever had anything like the sweating I am having. I have found that I cannot tolerate anything on my arms or legs. I even notice a difference between tank tops and tee shirts. I rarely use my car heater in the winter and often drive with a window down. I am single and retired so I can do whatever I want. About 3 1/2 years ago, I was wearing sheatshirts in Dec then we had a warm week so I went back to tee shirts. The next week it was cold again and I found I could not tolerate sweatshirts. It is definately something very mysterious and a horrible thing to live with. It keeps me from doing a lot of things I would like to do, like joining clubs or even walking. Sorry, my messages always seem to be long. What are your CL and sodium levels? My cl is just below the range and sodium is toward the bottom of the range. Guest guest
Dr. Grim, As I said in the message I just posted, I have been trying to relate the sweating to my bp for years. I just had one of those spells about an hour ago and check my bp right away. it was 152/81 Pulse 77. I checked it about 10 minutes later after the heat and sweating subsided and it was 148/80, Pulse 72. I take labetalol 3 x day. I have checked my bp at times when it was higher than it usually is and then a couple of minutes later the heat and sweating would start. I do not have a pheo. I do have a 9 mm " nodule " on my left adrenal but Dr Carey at UVA said that it is harmless and that my aldo is secondary since it is suppressed by saline. You and the dr at Hopkins disagree with that. I had an octreotide scan which showed nothing. The dr at Hopkins thought my bp was fine at 141/70? so he didn't recommend doing AVS since the right adrenal vein was very hard to get to. I told him that my bp often goes up to the upper 160s but he ignored that. Cortisol (salivary, urine, and plasma) are all normal but I got a copy of my tests from Hopkins and my plasma ACTH was a little high (31 pg/mL Range 5-27) The dr never told me this and I don't know what it means. I do not plan to go back since he doesn't appear to know anything. He didn't check K or NA and I had to ask him to check my thyroid. He called when I was out of town and left a message saying the saliva tests were normal but didn't say anything about the other tests. I got copies of the results so I would know about the thyroid since I need a new RX which I will get from my primary. I do not understand medical schools. What are they teaching young doctors?? The Hopkins dr said that I probably did have a parathyroid tumor, too but that it was " fairly common in women your age " and he didn't think anything should be done about it since it wasn't causing any damage to my bones. I don't know how he knew that since he didn't do any bone density tests. I guess because I didn't have any casts on, he assumed my bones were OK??? The next time I check my bp and have one of those sweating spells right after, I will check it later and see if it goes down. But it will just be luck to catch it before the sweating starts. Guest guest
Farah, It is definately not an affect of Spiro because I had it years before I was put on spiro. Also when I go off of spiro for testing, it gets much worse then improves when I restart spiro. Dr Grim, I forgot until now that when I am not on spiro and have one of these " hot flashes " my heart does pound and I remember one night I was asleep and was awakened by the sound of my blood rushing thru the veins in my head. I don't know if my pulse was any faster or not, just that it scared me to death. Guest guest
Dr. Grim, That TSH level is high for any lab! Also I have been told by several endos that TSH should be between 1 and 2. The labs always have a wider range which is too bad because most non-endos go by the lab results - if it is 4 and that is within the range for that lab, then they think it is OK. If the TSH is high, the thyroid is underactive, if TSH is low, the thyroid is hyper. I do not have migraine headaches. I have sinus headaches which go away with tylenol but then come back when it wears off. Accupuncture also seems to be helping my sinus congestion. I went to my primary on Fri and asked for a different BB to see if that will help. I just started the new one yesterday so it is too early to tell. I haven't heard of anyone in my family that had low K problems but my aunt had high K a few years ago. She has congestive heart failure and is 93. I have been to several neurologists and find them totally worthless. I told them all of my symptoms and none of them ever said anything about autonomic nervous system disorder. I gave up on them years ago. They didn't know what was causing the problems but had drugs that they thought would treat them. The drugs aggrevated the pain and numbness in my feet. That is why I turned to acupuncture because DOCTORS ARE NOT HELPING ME!!! Guest guest
Dr. Grim, I am not sure what you mean by after a spell. I have had these spells every day of my life for the past 7 years and they are gradually getting worse. I have had many 24 hour urine collections during that time. Dr. Carey tested my plasma metanephrines and the results were: metaneprine 0.20 (range <0.5) normetanephrine 0.55 (range <.90) I thought he also did urine catecholomines but can't find the results. If he did, I guess everything was OK because he said the " nodule " on my left adrenal was not producing any hormones. Guest guest
Dr. Grim, I know you can hear that sound if you lay your ear against a pillow but not that loud - not loud enough to wake you up from a sound sleep. Before I was on spiro, ER docs heard a bruit and I had scans of the carotid artery but they didn't find anything. When I told my primary about it, he couldn't hear it. It seems that it only heppens when my bp is extremely high. Every time I went to the ER with very high bp (235/110+) I was taking a bp RX that seemed to be driving it up. It happened both times I took ACE inhibitors and twice when I was taking clonidine.
