Please take your BP when you are sweating and your heart rate. Do this several times. Have you had low K problems. Have you ever been tested for pheochromocytoma?

Dr. Grim,

I am also having severe sweating. Being on Spiro only for about a year now it appears the sweating is getting worse. I've been monitoring my bp and immediately after the seating my bp has actually been on the low side. HR no change. Checked my glucose during the sweating episodes and the blood sugar has always been under 100. I dont have diabetes.

Could this be a side effect of spiro?

Thank,

Farah

Have not encountered this with Spiro., but have not specifically asked about it in my followup with women on it. Need to add it I would think.

Remind me of how old you are and a what age your mother and sisters went thru menopause and what Sx they had.

My Mom was not really

sick, except for high cholesterol, until her mid-50s when her

smoking caught up with her and her heart.

As the above notes calling someone not really sick who smokes and has high cholesterol is one of the biggest myths we have today. Her blood vessels had been getting sicker and sicker since she started smoking and if the high cholesterol was present in grade school, which it in many famillies, she had early blood vessel disease when she was a teenager.

Smoking brings on heart attacks in those with high cholesterol about 20 years earlier that if they did not smoke. So anyone who smokes now or who has ever smoked has sick blood vessels now. Stopping slows the sickness down and after 20 years of stopping they may be back to where the are for people of your age who have never smoked-if you and your blood vessels last that long.

Recon its all in the interpretation. Recall that heart disease is not an normal human condition. It only develops when we

1. feed or exercise our genome incorrectly and/or

2. we were made wrong (bad genes) and/or

3. we made bad choices (smoking) and/or

4. we have worn out (from 1,2 and 3)

These charts have never been tested in any scientific way to document that they tell anyone anything. They are good for the practiioners pocket book however. Ask for some studies in reputable journals that show they help.

Tonia,

I forgot to mention that I also have underactive thyroid but it is OK

on synthroid. Thyroid shouldn't cause sweating unless it is

overactive. When my bp suddenly shot up in May 99 and I was having a

lot of hot flashes and sweating, I thought my thyroid was overactive

(at the time I was on 75 mg Synthroid). I asked my primary (only dr

at that time) what the thyroid was doing. He looked at my chart and

said he didn't check it last year and he didn't check it then

either. A few days later, I asked to be admitted to the hosp for my

bp (240/110) and when they checked my TSH, it was over 8 so it

definately wasn't my thryoid.

Dont know what is normal for this lab--but, if high, seems to suggest that your thyroid was low which can also cause high BP.

I also get very tired and sometimes I just have to take a nap only to

wake up 10 minutes later with a "hot flash" and sweating. After that

I am no longer tired. I have tried for years to associate it with my

bp and I think it jumps up just BEFORE the hot flash and then goes

down after. I tried to find readings but didn't usually write down

when I was sweating. I know I have just happened to check it a few

times and it was real high (160s) and then the heat started within a

couple of minutes. Stress or anger will also trigger a "hot flash".

No one in my family has anything like this either.

I would ask about migraine headache syndromes-with your primary.

I do not have any

sisters but my mother died at the age of 93. She was overweight for

over 45 years and had high bp for a good number of those years. She

never had anything like the sweating and said she never had any

problems with menopause, she just quit having periods when she was in

her early 50s. If anyone is interested, she has 2 sisters still

living who have also been overweight most of their lives. One is 93

and the other is 91 and both have congestive heart failure that

developed around age 90. Non of them ever had anything like the

sweating I am having.

Got some good genes there it sounds like.

Did they ever have K problems?

I have found that I cannot tolerate anything on my arms or legs. I

even notice a difference between tank tops and tee shirts. I rarely

use my car heater in the winter and often drive with a window down.

I am single and retired so I can do whatever I want. About 3 1/2

years ago, I was wearing sheatshirts in Dec then we had a warm week

so I went back to tee shirts. The next week it was cold again and I

found I could not tolerate sweatshirts. It is definately something

very mysterious and a horrible thing to live with. It keeps me from

doing a lot of things I would like to do, like joining clubs or even

walking.

Sounds like you have an autonomic nervous system problem. Have you ever been tested for this?

Sorry, my messages always seem to be long. What are your CL and

sodium levels? My cl is just below the range and sodium is toward

the bottom of the range.

Rarely a pheo only secretes too much NE during a spell. Has anyone had you collect a urine for catecholamines during and after a spell?

This sound can be heard by many people if they lay with their ear against a pillow. Next time you see your primary be sure he listens over your next for bruits---if that has not been done in the last year.

Dr. Grim,

I know you can hear that sound if you lay your ear against a pillow

but not that loud - not loud enough to wake you up from a sound

sleep. Before I was on spiro, ER docs heard a bruit and I had scans

of the carotid artery but they didn't find anything. When I told my

primary about it, he couldn't hear it. It seems that it only heppens

when my bp is extremely high. Every time I went to the ER with very

high bp (235/110+) I was taking a bp RX that seemed to be driving it

up. It happened both times I took ACE inhibitors and twice when I

was taking clonidine.

Fran

Some thin ladys have a venous humm that sounds like a bruit when the neck is in a certain positon or the steth is pressed too hard. Goes away whenn pressing softly about the stehtocsope to block venous flow

I have been to several neurologists and find them totally worthless.

I told them all of my symptoms and none of them ever said anything
