Hello.

I would like to get some opinions on holding a child back

one year in the early grades. What are your thoughts?

Concerns? What have you read regarding this? I know that

for an average child, retention can cause more problems

than it helps. But I feel differently regarding my son

with Down and where he is developmentally and emotionally.

My son, age 6, is in Kindergarten. I would have preferred

that he attend Pre K4 this year but he was already 5 and

that kept him out of it. So I let him go to Kindergarten.

He is doing OK but I would like him to attend Kindergarten

for one more year. The school frowns on that and thinks he

would be better served to go into First grade. I am

beginning to search, contemplate, and think this through so

that when the time comes I have either an opinion to agree

with the school or a stronger opinion as to why I disagree.

I am not listing all of my thoughts and reasons right now,

but would like to know if any of you have thoughts,

opinions regarding retention.

We just had an IEP meeting (41 pages!) and I brought this

up and I could tell they were shocked that I felt this way.

Thanks,

Kiersten
