Well, goodness knows we have enough folks sprouting on this list! You'll be in good company.

I have tried for a couple of years now to be able to tolerate greens better. My digestive system just doesn't do right with it. So I quit.

I have found that I enjoy eating sugar and snap peas raw just out of a bowl. Red bell peppers are also good. Now I'm looking for other ideas to increase my veggie intake. I am going to try some sprouting when I get back from vacation.

i know this is a vitamix group but this could positively affect your health so i just wanted to throw out there that you might want to try juicing, which extracts the fiber and does not tax the digestive system....just a thought :)

Hey, I juice and I'm pretty sure others here do, too (I think juices for her daughter). I'd like to think "juicing" isn't a dirty word here. :)

Although I grow a bunch of different types of veggies, I can't eat many of them (I grow them for my vegetarian daughter) It is the salicylates and amines that make them hard on me. As mentioned, sometimes juicing makes a difference, since it removed the fiber. If that is your issue, juicing should be fine. I can help with sprouting-I sprout everything I can get my hands on, lol. (I do okay with some sprouts, not others) Finding out what your issue with veggies is could go along way towards helping you sort it out-it might simply be that you need them cooked, rather than raw. From: lil_joy

If we get into too deeply here, we can always move it to the OT group (a true stroke of genius on Lea Ann's part).

And if you puree the food in the Vitamix, then use a nut milk bag to strain the puree into a juice - the end product can be better than a traditional juicer because you can wring the pulp VERY dry!

Kim, have you tried cooking greens to see how your body reacts to them? I've fallen in love with the Southern Style Greens we discussed a while back. I used cooked greens in soups a lot too.I frequently eat cooked collards, kale, spinach, etc.

le,Oh what a great idea! I am going to try this! I'll blend it in the vitamix and strain it with a nut milk bag. We get a lot of greens from our CSA every week so finding a way to use them would be really good. Thanks for the idea!Kim

Lea Ann,Now that you mention it I don't remember ever having a problem with cooked spinach. I haven't tried kale or collards. I'll try spinach again first then maybe branch out to others if all goes well. Thanks for the idea!Kim

Kim, watch the third video for a good green juice recipe (I make this juice and it's delicious): http://www.nwjcal.com/ . I suppose you could toss everything into the Vitamix but you might need some water; just run through a nut milk bag when you're done.

I would love to juice with the vitamix. Where would one get a nut bag

& wouldn't a sieve also work?

A sieve won't work-you will just get a big clump of puree sitting in it blocking the juice from flowing through. posted a link in the files section of a place that has good prices on very good bags. I make my own, but also have some of the ones from the link.

You need to check the "Links" section of home page for a good source.

You'd need a very fine sieve and you can't squeeze it; they're also much more of a pain to clean (they clog a lot) than the bags.

There is a nut milk bag on the "things I recommend" page of my website or a nut milk bag ebay seller - the link is on the home page of this group (on the links page)

If you want to get the most out of your carrots or other foods you juice, you

could get a set of bags from Norwalk. They are only $4 each but are very tough.

http://www.norwalkjuicers.com/parts-accessories

Then get a press such as the Welles Peoples Press http://t.co/gHFm1Fl

If you juice organic foods a lot it will pay for itself in no time in the

quantity of juice you get out of it.

It will also give you more nutrients since the last bit squeezed out has extra

nutrients in it.

If you are really serious about juicing for a health reason such as cancer, I

would say definitely get the Norwalk. Otherwise the manual press should work.

I disagree. Norwalk bags are built to fit over the feed tube of the juicer and are much too narrow to deal with filling by hand to be practical which is why I wouldn't even recommend them for use with a manual press; to tell you the truth, I rarely bother with them because I much prefer the cloths. In addition, they're meant to be folded into thirds before being pressed, with the produce (no more than 1 cup) in the middle third, to take the stress off the seams; filling them and squeezing them by hand is a recipe for disaster and Carol (the president of Norwalk) will tell you the same thing; this is born out by the fact that Norwalk owners are constantly being exhorted not to overfill the bags in order to prevent their bursting. In addition, the bags have to be rinsed immediately after use in cold water and then stored in the freezer; allowing them to dry after their first use is pretty much a death sentence to your investment. Again, contacting Norwalk and asking them will bear me out.

Nylon nut milk bags, as long as they're food-grade, are the way to go. Unlike fabric (like hemp), they don't rot or disintegrate, are more resistant to contamination, and they're fine enough to give you good results. Don't waste your money on Norwalk bags.
